Pituitary types are the rarest of all body types. Perhaps no more than 5% of the population has this type of metabolism, with most Pituitary types being men. You gain weight all over your body rather than in just one or two areas (you may call it “baby fat”) and you tend to be intellectual, cool, detached, and not overly interested in sex. You are probably often accused of being younger than you are. If you are an overweight pituitary type, you have most likely gained weight by overindulging in dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. This has overstimulated and exhausted your pituitary gland (the main drive of your metabolism) and created an imbalance in your body.

Dr. Abravanel's Pituitary type diet is designed to re-establish balance in your system. You will eliminate pituitary-stimulating foods and thyroid-stimulating sweets and starches, as well. This means you will be cutting out dairy products and cutting back on sugar, white flour, and all refined grains such as white rice. You will increase your intake of protein from animal sources. As a matter of fact, your diet includes more protein than any of the other body types. This is ironic since you probably don´t prefer meat and most likely feel you can´t digest it. But your metabolism is not suited to a vegetarian diet.

Dr. Abravanel´s Pituitary diet is low fat and healthy. Besides consuming more protein from animal sources, you will be allowed to eat moderate amounts of whole-grain carbohydrates, fruit in moderation (two pieces daily), and plenty of vegetables. This holistic diet will stimulate your adrenals, strengthen your digestion, accelerate your metabolism and boost your sexuality. You will become more in touch with your food cravings and thus learn to control them along with your appetite. This will give you steadier energy throughout the day. You are beginning an exciting journey of self-discovery.

How Food Affects Your Metabolism

Once you have lost weight and reestablished balance in your system, you will be able to add some low-fat dairy back into your diet. By then your adrenals and digestion will be stronger and better able to handle it. In the meantime, vow off of dairy so your metabolism can more effectively burn fat.

You will also need to avoid caffeine for now. Caffeine stimulates your thyroid, which will not benefit your metabolism. Stick to decaffeinated drinks for now. An herbal tea made of fenugreek seed will benefit your metabolism and help you control cravings.

Eat plenty of vegetables on this diet. As a P-type, you naturally feel colder than other body types, so you may avoid eating salads because of this. Don't be afraid to eat plenty of lightly cooked vegetables. They will still provide the nutrients and balance your metabolism needs. Try steaming, stir-frying, or roasting your vegetables in one teaspoonful of oil.

Your diet includes no dairy products, plenty of animal-source protein (especially beef and organ meats, and also chicken without the skin), and fish. You can enjoy whole grain carbohydrates in moderation, fruit in moderation, no sugar or refined grains or flour, no caffeine, and plenty of vegetables, either cooked or raw.

Quick Diet Facts:

  • The pituitary diet is the highest in protein
  • Eat plenty of fresh vegetables (sauteed, roasted or steamed)
  • Avoid caffeine and sugar for now
  • Limit dairy except for yogurt
  • Include organ meats in your diet

The Diet Plan in Detail

Since the pituitary gland is active early in the day and almost inactive at night, you are most likely a “morning person”. You subscribe to the old adage: “early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” To fit with this natural rhythm of your body and maximize weight loss, Pituitary types must eat a substantial breakfast with meat, a moderate lunch and a very light dinner. You can remember it this way: eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper.

You probably tend to eat a lighter breakfast of yogurt and fruit or milk and cereal. But a large breakfast that incorporates meat will stimulate your adrenal glands, give you energy and focus throughout the day and help you avoid snacking, especially due to stress or nervousness. Lunch should also include some protein to help you avoid afternoon snacking. Because your metabolism is almost inactive at night, a heavy dinner will only cause indigestion and weight gain. If you absolutely must snack, keep cooked meat in the refrigerator such as a low-fat hamburger patty. A few bites of meat will stimulate your adrenal glands, give you energy and keep you satisfied enough to avoid snacking on your downfall foods such as dairy and refined carbs, which will imbalance your system.

If you absolutely can´t stomach the meat for breakfast, substitute 2 eggs for the meat. Then eat 4 ounces of beef or pork with lunch and 4 ounces of fish or poultry with dinner.

Don´t snack the four hours between breakfast and lunch and six hours between lunch and dinner. If you find your metabolism is still sluggish in the beginning and weight loss starts off slow, you will need to try a week of Dr. Abravanel´s “last 5 pounds diet”. His book outlines the diet in detail.

The “last 5 pounds diet” includes only 1,000 calories per day, about 200 calories less than the basic diet, and excludes about 50% of the carbohydrates allowed in this diet. You are also required to make a vegetable soup to be eaten with all meals. You can only stay on it for a week at a time before returning to the basic diet. You can alternate the two diet plans until you get down to your ideal weight.

Use no more than 1 teaspoonful of oil when preparing meat and vegetables for each meal.

Meal Ideas

Dr. Abravanel prescribes organ meats for pituitary types. It may seem repulsive at first glance, but give it a try for at least 30 days. We think the results you see will give you the motivation to stick to the diet. Try the following meals to vary the diet:

  • Chicken stir fry with plenty of veggies
  • Beef fajitas with whole grain or corn tortillas and plenty of red pepper and onion. Omit the sour cream
  • Omelette with fresh herbs, vegetables and ham.
  • Tuna salad made of 4 ounces of water packed tuna (use 1 Tablespoon of diet mayonnaise and eat it on 1 slice of whole grain bread).
  • Baked white fish or salmon with quinoa pilaf
  • Meat options: pork chop, scallops and shrimp, chicken kabobs, chicken salad with 1 Tablespoon of diet mayo
  • Sauteed liver with fig, bacon & carmelized onion compote.

You'll never get bored with this diet!

Sip fenugreek tea several times a day to control cravings and give your pituitary a boost.

Why Fenugreek Tea?

Fenugreek tea will boost your metabolism and increase fat burning. It is traditionally used for digestion and can stop symptoms of heartburn. Some claim that fenugreek can even lower cholesterol when taken regularly.

Fenugreek seed has a pleasant flavor of maple syrup and is often used in imitation maple flavorings. Boil one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water for several minutes. Strain and serve. You can also purchase fenugreek packaged in tea bags for easier preparation.

Rarest Body Type-Most Unique of the Diet Plans

This diet may seem very strange… after all, organ meats are not often recommended for breakfast by dieticians. But the one-size-fits-all diet breakfast of yogurt and fruit or bran flakes and milk isn't right for every metabolism. I guarantee if you try this diet for just 30 days, you will see a dramatic transformation in your body. And believe me, the food Dr. Abravanel prescribes will be like medicine to your body. It's worth the effort to take care of yourself.

Before beginning any diet, seek the advice of your physician.

Question: What diseases are commonly associated with pituitary body types?

Answer: Unbalanced pituitary types tend to develop digestive issues, according to Dr. Abravanel. The pituitary diet strengthens the adrenals and gonads and encourages weight loss, improves digestion and boosts sexuality.
