Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is an age-old ingredient for healthy living. Drinking it can bring a number of health benefits.

There has been some research about how ACV can help you lose weight. In 2009, The Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry journal published a study finding that drinking it for just three months caused significant declines in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference, and triglycerides.

It can also improve heart health. The vinegar contains malic acid which clears clogged arteries, lymph nodes, and organ tissues.

When applied to the skin, it can help eliminate acne, warts, and many other skin blemishes and discolorations. A lot of people add a touch of ACV to their bathwater in order to improve the health of their skin.

Apple cider vinegar has a number of other health benefits: it treats heartburn, improves sleep quality, is a home remedy for insomnia, improves energy levels, helps with digestion, and strengthens the immune system.

However, despite all the potential benefits of apple cider vinegar, it’s not a quick fix. If you’re looking to lose weight fast, then ACV is not right for you. Think of it as a marathon, rather than a sprint.

Read the guidelines below to learn how about taking ACV for weight loss.

How to Take Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss (and Other Health Benefits)

FAQ

Tips
How do I drink it?
Mix 2 tsp with 8 oz of water.
Drink it with a straw to protect your tooth enamel.
When do I drink it?
Drink it before or after meals.
Some don't like drinking ACV on an empty stomach, and others say it helps control cravings if they drink it after eating.
How often do I drink it?
2 - 3 times a day
You can increase the amount of ACV as your body gets used to it
Do I need to add honey?
No. It's just to improve the flavor.
If you're avoiding sugar, use Stevia instead.
Which brand should I buy?
Any unpasteurized, unfiltered brand is fine
Bragg is a well-known organic brand of ACV. Organic is best, if possible.
Can I drink unpasteurized ACV raw?
Yes. The acidity level is high enough to kill bacteria like e. coli
Just be sure to dilute it.
How much is too much?
It's recommended to drink no more than 2 tablespoons a day.
If you experience any burning or nausea, either reduce the amount of ACV or try drinking it at a different time.

#1: Which Brand of Apple Cider Vinegar Is Best?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It should be made from cider or apple juice and should have a pale to medium amber color. Pretty much any brand will do: Bragg and Heinz are two of the better known ones, but there’s nothing wrong with a store brand or a generic version.

I do, however, strongly recommend that you buy the organic version.

#2: Organic or Non-Organic?

Organic apple cider vinegar (also known as unpasteurized or raw) contains the "mother of vinegar,” a substance filled with living nutrients and bacteria, which are responsible for many of the health benefits.

The organic kind will also be unfiltered, unheated, and unpasteurized. You will notice some strand-like sediment at the bottom of the bottle, so you’ll want to make sure you shake it before using. By contrast, the non-organic kind will be clear in colour.

#3: Can I Drink ACV by Itself?

While a 5% acid concentration may not seem like much, that’s actually pretty high for something you eat. As such, I would not recommend drinking the vinegar by itself since the taste can be pretty intense!

#4: How Do I Drink It?

Mix 2-3 tsp vinegar with a minimum of 8 ounces (225 grams or one cup) of water. You can add more water if the taste is still too strong for you. You can also add honey, which really helps improve the flavor.

The ideal quantity of ACV will vary from person to person. Typically I use 1 tablespoon (15ml) per 8oz water but I have known people who mix 4 to 5 teaspoons (20ml to 25ml) per cup of water. I also drink it in the morning on an empty stomach and at night before dinner. Others have found routines that work better for them.

I recommend drinking it with a straw. Highly acidic foods can damage the enamel on your teeth and, even diluted, ACV can cause some serious damage. It’s also not a bad idea to brush your teeth immediately before and after your drink.

Alternatively, rinse your mouth with a mixture of water and baking soda, which will counteract the acidity in your mouth and protect your teeth.

#5: Can I Drink It With Tea, Coffee, or Juice?

Many people don't like the taste of ACV and would prefer to mix it with something a bit more appetizing and there is no harm in doing that. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that caffeine may slow down the absorption process, so use herbal or decaf tea if possible.

Also keep in mind that if coffee, tea, and juice are all acidic. So if you are mixing ACV with a fruit juice, you will be increasing the acidity levels of the drink, which is not very good for your teeth.

A number of people have also asked if they can mix the vinegar with carbonated water, soda, or energy drinks. I say, if it helps you get past the taste, do whatever you need to. However, soft drinks and energy drinks are not good for your health: they contain a lot of sugar and other chemicals which are best to avoid if you’re trying to lose weight. And soda is even more acidic than coffee or juice!

For best results, I recommend (as I said above) plain water (with a bit of honey mixed in) at a ratio of about two teaspoons of vinegar to eight ounces of water.

It's not advised to drink ACV with milk, since the vinegar will cause the milk to curdle.

ACV contains the antioxidant beta-carotene, which helps break down and remove unwanted fat from your body

#6: When Should I Drink It?

Another common question is, “What’s the best time of day to drink the mixture?”

You can drink it any time of day, but I’d recommend drinking it before meals because it improves digestion. My recommendation is to drink it right after waking up and again right before dinner.

#7: How Often Should I Drink It?

I would recommend taking it twice a day, though you can drink it three to four times a day.

However, drinking more won’t help you lose weight faster. Simply upping the frequency or dosage won’t really benefit you. Quick weight loss is not possible with apple cider vinegar. You have to give it time to work.

#8: Can I Take ACV in Pill Form?

While many people prefer to take it the old-fashioned way, there's a growing number of people who opt for pills because of their convenience and and ease. Taking pills can also address your concern about damaging your teeth. However, there isn't much research about the pills' effectiveness.

Personally, I prefer the liquid form. I like seeing the strand of the "mother" at the bottom of the bottle and knowing that the probiotics will soon be helping me.

#9: Does ACV Interfere With Medications?

Apple cider vinegar is derived from apples and as such it is safe to drink apple cider vinegar while on medication. However, some studies report that, when combined with some medications, ACV can lower potassium levels and may interfere with the absorption of some medicines as well. However, if you are prescribed strong medicines, it is advisable to consult your physician before getting on cider vinegar diet.

Similarly, pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers should speak to their physician about apple cider vinegar and its effect on women's bodies. While there’s no research indicating that there should be any danger, there’s no research guaranteeing its safety either.

Many doctors recommend that pregnant women not consume any unpasteurized foods so as to reduce the risk of ingesting any bacteria that could potentially harm your child. That would mean that pregnant women would not be able to drink the organic vinegar, which is the kind that has all the health benefits.

If you have an existing medical condition, please talk to your doctor about ACV.

Before You Go

One final word: I recommend taking a break every now and then to give your body a rest. You don’t want your body to get used to it and have the effects diminish over time. I try to take a week or two off after every 3 to 4 months.

Also, some research shows that prolonged use of cider vinegar may deplete the body of iodine. So, taking a break from cider vinegar may also help your body recover.

Hello, Please note that "organic" does not imply unfiltered or raw ACV. For example, Spectrum produces an organic, filtered ACV. However, I expect most raw ACVs also happen to be organic. Cheers, Jim

Hi Zeppy, there's nothing wrong it taking ACV pills and drinking ACV too. I am not aware of any side-effects of consuming too much ACV. However, remember, our body uses whatever it needs, and discards excess material consumed. So you will be effectively flushing ACV down the drain if you overdo it.

Hi Vvitta, good luck with cider vinegar. Yes, it tastes awful initially, but you will get used to it if you persist. Also, add honey to improve the taste. For further weight-loss benefit, you can add cinnamon. For better taste, some people mix it with orange juice.

Hi Gloria, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may require probiotics to manage symptoms. Cider vinegar is NOT a probiotic, but its effect is complementary to the work of probiotics. Cider vinegar contains pectin, which is a natural prebiotic. Cider vinegar cleans stomach of toxins and removes them from the body, making way for probiotics to grow and do their job well in the stomach. In that sense, cider vinegar helps digestion. Begin with small quantity - 1 tsp in one cup water a day, and see how you feel. However, this forum is not medical advice. I would strongly recommend speaking to your doctor to discuss your options.

Hi Lol, if your veins are visible as a result of a strenuous weight-lifting, then that's not really varicose veins, as you would have figured after reading my article about it. The veins should go back to normal appearance with time. However, you can apply cider vinegar to your forearms anyway. If nothing elese, your skin will get healthier. :)

Hi Tamilselvi, thank you for your question. You may drink cider vinegar drink for all your life. It is a natural product, and has very few side effects. However, you may want to take a few days' break every few months, so that your body doesn't get too dependent on cider vinegar.

Regarding your second question, yes, you may add garlic to your ACV drink. Garlic is good for increasing metabolism, and adding garlic to cider vinegar seems to be a common practice.

what is the dilution of ACV to dissolve gallbladder stones? If taken without diluting in water, is there a side effect for this? I take 3 thsp of ACV with one lemon juice to dissolve gall stones, is this the correct way?

101Ways2Life 2 years ago from Clean and Green New Zealand

Hi Norma, put two to four tsp of ACV in a cup (8 oz 250ml) water, and drink it. You may add juice from 4 lemons (8 to 10 tsp) to it. I wouldn't recommend drinking undiluted ACV as this may damage teeth as well as food pipe. If you absolutely have to, then increase the quantity of cider vinegar to say 8 to 10 tsp in a cup of water. Someone I know closely has gallbladder stones, and she has found one more effective remedy - she drinks fresh juice of beet root, cucumber and carrot (in equal proportions) every morning. She has been drinking this for two years, and her gallbladder stones haven't hassled her since.

More remedies to control gallbladder stones:

      1. Drink plenty of water - at least 10 glasses or more

      2. Avoid or reduce consumption of sugar

      3. Avoid fat-containing food

      4. Introduce Omega 3 fatty acids food like salmon in your diet

      5. Eat more fiber - whole grains, lentils, fruits and vegetables. Eat banana, spinach and brocoli, which are high in fiber and low in calories.

      6. Take vitamin C supplements, and eat oranges, or kiwifruit.

      7. More importantly, talk to your doctor. All alternative medicines should go hand in hand with professional medical treatment.

Hi Madeeha, yes, drink apple cider vinegar soon after waking up. i drink it before brushing my teeth, so that vinegar wouldn't damage my teeth enamel. Regarding your second query 'how long will it take to lose weight with cider vinegar', this varies from person to person. But you will see the results within 15 days of drinking cider vinegar. You can continue to drink cider vinegar for as long as it takes to reach your weight loss goal. For skin, apply diluted ACV on face, and then rinse off after half an hour. Do this twice a day for cleansing. To remove pimples, apply undiluted cider vinegar directly on the affected area. Avoid applying undiluted cider vinegar on healthy skin, as this may cause break-out in some people.

Hi Tahira, yes, you may benefit from drinking apple cider vinegar as a cure for joints pain and arthritis. While there is no extensive research available, plenty of people have shared their experience for getting great results with ACV.

P J Raikes from Oxford, Oxfordshire, shares their experience on Arthritis Research UK website: "I've had osteoarthritis since my early sixties (I’m now approaching 90). I've had two hip replacements and very stiff knees. I used to be able to walk for about 20 minutes, or 30 with difficulty, after which time my back became increasingly uncomfortable. Then a friend recommended cider vinegar. You take a dessertspoonful in a glass of water, three times a day. The result is miraculous! I can now walk as much as I want to. Several of my friends have tried it with good results."

Arthiritis Research UK recommends the following dosage: Put a teaspoon of honey in boiling water in a drinking glass. Add cold water and a teaspoon of cider vinegar, mix thoroughly, and take before food three times a day"

      Hi 101Ways2Life,

Awesome post! I have been drinking about 2 cups of water right when I get up and it helps me to go to bathroom. I have been wanting to add the apple cider vinegar with water to my morning routine, but don't know how. Should I just add the ACV to my two cups of water, or drink the two cups of water and wait a while before consuming the ACV with water. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Hi llcc, thank you for your positive comment about the article. I have a similar habit - I drink water soon after arising. This is what I do. I drink one cup (250ml) water mixed with 3 tsp of ACV. I follow this up with one cup of water after about 5 minutes. This helps ACV settle in first. Also, washing down ACV drink with water helps in removing ACV from teeth and from the food pipe, thus reducing chances of damage to the food pipe which can possibly occur over extended use of ACV.

Hi! You recommend taking a break from ACV. What kind of cycle might you recommend? 3 months on, 3 months off perhaps? I am interested in the benefits of ACV without the side-effect of diminished bone mineral density.

      Thanks!

    • profile image

      Scott 2 years ago

      Addendum to my previous comment:

Instead of cycling 3 months on and 3 months off, it might make more sense to cycle 6 months on in the fall and winter (following apple harvest), and 6 months off in the spring and fall. Regardless, I am interested in your take on how to cycle ACV.

      Thanks again!

Hi Scott, thank you for your questions about what kind of cycle to follow for taking a break from apple cider vinegar.

First things first- there's limited research available, and as such, most advice you will find is based on personal experience. ACV doesn't have any known side effects, and I have talked about taking periodic breaks from ACV because it will help in breaking the habit. You wouldn't want your body to get too dependent on ACV and not do things that it is naturally expected to do - that is - maintain a healthy body.

That said, I wouldn't recommend a very long break. My breaks vary. When I am travelling, which I often do, I am on a forced break from ACV for a week. This happens roughly about once in two months. Then I take voluntary breaks so that I am regularly abstaining from ACV for about 7 - 10 days every two months.

There's no right or wrong practice. You will effectively have to design a routine that matches your body-type.

However, taking a six-month break maybe too long. Maybe you could try one month on and one month off. Not too sure if following the apple harvesting cycle is relevant, because most good brands of ACV are produced from a good harvest.

Hi Krima, thank you for your question about the side effects of apple cider vinegar. I get this query often and intend to write an article about it. In the meantime, here's a short answer. Apple cider vinegar is a natural product, and there are no known side effects. However, drink in moderation, as prescribed. Also, if you are already on any medication, then consult your docctor before starting ACV diet. This is especially true if you are on medication for diabetes or hypertension.

HI Beverly, are you drinking it on an empty stomach? Also, if you are experiencing uneasyness, try to reduce the quantity. Just put 1 tsp of ACV in a cup of water and see if it still makes you uneasy. Try drinking it at different times and see how you feel. Experimenting with ACV dosage and timing will help you arrive at the best combination that works for you. Pills are a tricky issue, because there are no known studies to support the claim that ACV in pill form is as effective.

Hi Nita, yes ACV is good for diabetes, as it helps in digestion, and regulates the release of sugar after meal. It prevents the sudden release of sugar. I have written more about this in my book Magical Apple Cider Vinegar - http://amzn.to/1fJnMWB.

Regarding your second question about using ACV as a mouth-wash, yes, I use it to rinse my mouth. Rinse it for a brief 4-5 seconds. Always use it diluted, and make sure you rinse your mouth with water after ACV. This will prevent any damage to teeth.

Hi Lata, while there's not much research work done on apple cider vinegar's benefits for kidney problem, it is said to help remove kidney stones. Apple cider vinegar contains 5% acetic acid that could soften and dissolve kidney stones. ACV can also help in cleaning the kidneys internally. Put 2 - 3 teaspoons of unpasteurized, unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar in 6 – 8 oz of fresh water.

Hi Varun, based on the description you have provided, it doesn't seem like an unpasteurized and unfiltered ACV. Please look for a brand that specifically describes the ACV as unpasteurized and unfiltered. That's the ACV that offers the health benefits mentioned here.

HI Sameer, ACV will not make you lose weight in specific areas. It will cause overall weight loss. Just like any exercise routine which causes weight loss all around. You can only expedite the weight loss around tummy by doing lots of stomach crunches. Also eliminate sugar completely from your diet.

I would like to try ACV pills, but my concern is how do we know if pills contain ACV with 'The Mother'? I have checked many bottles and web sites and none of them list this information. One brand offered extra strength capsules (1000 mg of active ingredient) how much is too much in a capsule? Just trying to avoid any stomach lining damage from acidity.

I think brushing teeth after drinking AVC is a bad idea. Even though there is a myth that you should brush teeth after breakfast, you should actually do it before, to prevent enamel from being destroyed. Foods and in particular Acids (AVC and orange juice) make enamel weak and brushing teeth breaks it down if you brush it after eating/drinking.

I have a recipe for Detox which calls for ACV (BRAGG), 4tbsp, 4tbsp Lemon juice or hole lemon cut up, 1tsp 100 % ground cinnamon, 1 pinch cayenne pepper, 4Tbsp of honey. in 12 ounces of water. Hi Johnson, yes, you could prepare it in a shaker bottle and take it along. However, because the drink is acidic, it is best to brush your teeth after drinking it every time, so as to avoid any potential damage to teeth. You have a nice detox recipe, and if you wish you could split the drink into two cups of 6 ounces each, and drink it twice a day.

Indigestion is caused by improper eating habits, unbalanced diet, and lack of exercise. As long as these factors persist, you will have the problem of indigestion. One of the things that you could do is use ACV for a while as you is changing their lifestyle. Perhaps ACV can be a good start towards becoming healthier, but has to be used as a supplement to a good diet and exercise.

Hello, I really enjoyed your article. I've been putting 2 tsp of acv with the mother from bragg along with 1 tsp of organic coconut oil, and 2 tsp of clover honey in my coffee daily, for about 2 weeks now. I feel wonderful. I started using it because I heard that it was good for you. Im 40yrs old and i felt horrible, ive got asthma and my joints were hurting, and my doctor asked me if i would try to add coffee to my regimen. I dont know if it is the hot coffee or the concoction that i have begun to use but i feel great. I havent been needing to use my inhaler. I havent felt this good since my twenties. I have so much energy. Its really great. Then i came across this article and I've learned alot more about acv. I have a few ?'s for you. 1. Is there anything wrong with the way I'm doing it other than I'm drinking it with coffee and I know you don't recommend unless it decaf. 2. If I choose to add cinnamon to this concoction how much do I add. 3. Can my wife use acv ,we are not sure cause she has a stomach ulcer that gives her acid indejestion. Thanks for any help you can give, hope you and everyone have a great day.

Hi Jason, thank you for reading the articles. Here are answers to your questions:

      1. Is there anything wrong with the way I'm doing it other than I'm drinking it with coffee? ANSWER: Yes, it is advisable to avoid any caffeine-related drink with ACV. Try and have coffee on its own, and drink ACV at another time of the day, and see how you feel. 2. If I choose to add cinnamon to this concoction how much do I add. ANSWER: Cinnamon can be quite spicy and even a pinch of it is sufficient. 3. Can my wife use acv, we are not sure cause she has a stomach ulcer that gives her acid indejestion. While ACV is acidic, it become alkaline when it enters the body. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor if she has stomach ulcer.

Do NOT brush your teeth right after consuming acidic foods or beverages. The acid softens your teeth, meaning the abrasive particels in the toothpaste will literally "sand down" your teeth. Wait half an hour, or use mouth wash instead.

I'm just curious about my results from drinking ACV. I'm 45 and just had my worst "cycle" ever. I decided to try to detox a little with ACV. I began two weeks ago and I feel very sluggish and have had digestive issues. I'm wondering if ACV could be causing me to have these symptoms-i know detoxing can cause them.

I am using ACV that I made from our own apple trees. I use the leftovers from making apple cider. Could it be too strong? I have been drinking it straight. I will can that to protect my teeth. I just wanted to check before I call the doctor and they send me through a bunch of tests I don't need.

Just to be clear- I'm just asking if you've ever heard of it causing anything like this, I'm not asking for a diagnosis.

      Thank you

Hello, I was wondering if using ACV will help alleviate chronic respiratory issues... I have had asthma since I was 9 years old, been on the same maintenance medicines --they stopped working and I have been in and out of hospitals and on long term steroid use for going on 3 years, I'm going on 26yrs of age in May. I have a young baby and want to be here for him, myself and my husband for a long time. I am tired and have gained so much weight and can't seem to get it off, no matter what I do... Other thing you could try is buy a good brand like BRAGG from the market, and see if drinking BRAGG solves your problem. If the problem persists, stop drinking ACV.

I have been mixing about 1/4 teaspoon Braggs ACV in 500 ml water and drinking this concentration 6 to 8 times a day. I read your excellent article (and most of the questions and replies). I am wondering if it would be better to mix 1/2 teaspoon Braggs ACV in 500 ml water to drink 3 to 4 times per day, alternating with plain water. Would that flush the ACV from my mouth and protect my tooth enamel? Thank-you.

Hi Tony, there's no hard-and-fast rule about the quantity of ACV for dilution. Each person has a different tolerance. You could start with 1 teaspoon in a cup of water, and then increase it to 3 teaspoons over time.

Hello! Great article! Thanks so much for putting this information together.

Question- if drinking warm lemon water first thing when I wake up in the mornings is in my daily routine , would adding ACV to my routine make my acid intake to high?

I want to start drinking ACV in the mornings and evenings before bed. So thinking lemon water 6/7am , then ACV water 8am or before breakfast , then again before bed. Is that too much acid ?

Thank you for the informative conversation. I am puzzled, though. If the stomach content is acidic (PH of 1.5 to 3.5, usually around 2) and the gastric acid (stomach juice) is predominantly a mix of hydrochloric acid (HCl), potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl), how does the ACV lower its acidity? ACV is acidic (acetic acid and citric acid) as well. How come adding acid in the form of ACV (although diluted) to the already acidic environment can make more alkaline? I would be grateful for more clarification. Thanking you in advance.

Could drinking ACV help me regain my natural color and does ACV reduce melanin production in the body over time. Very confused. Please help. Many thanks everyone.

It's a REALLY bad idea to brush your teeth immediately after drinking ACV (or anything acidic). This leads to more erosion of tooth enamel. Rinsing with water after is the correct procedure following drinking/eating acidic items. You should wait at least 30 minutes after to brush. Please feel free to fact check with the Mayo Clinic or any other reputable health/dental organization for more up-to-date information.

Tam, since you are already on grapefruit juice diet, you may want to start with just one cup of ACV drink initially and see how your body feels. Try it for a week, and if it works, then increase it to two cups for another week. You don’t want to overdo these acetic juices.

HI Bernadette, to avoid damage to teeth and the food pipe, it is advisable to drink it in a diluted form.

I have been on it for a month. But I drink it with grapefruit juice. I haven't lost a pound.. I don't eat red meat. Fish or chicken only, veggies n fruits. No sodas . just water.. What am I doing wrong?

Is the ratio really that important? I usually just put two tablespoons and a large glass of water twice a day.
