How to Lose Weight Fast With Ice Cream in Your Diet

How to lose weight in the short term with a diet that includes ice cream

How to lose weight in the short term with a diet that includes ice cream

Ice Cream and Weight Loss? It's Possible

Weight loss can be successful if it is done little by little, without denying oneself too much at once. That said, there are dates and events when one just needs to lose weight fast. Those are not the times to try the Atkins, South Beach, or Zone diets. Sometimes, you just don't have the time.

Here is a plan that allows ice cream but will still help you lose 10 pounds in 3 days. Following the same plan for 10 days can result in losing 20 pounds.

Who developed this diet? There are many theories. Some claim it was invented by the Cleveland Hospital while some say it came from the American Heart Association.

I have also read that this diet helps new recruits when they've joined the Marine Corps.

What matters is that people (including me) have reported losing weight—a few pounds or even all their baby weight—on this diet.

This also works as a healthy detox.

Note: Before beginning any weight loss plan, consult your doctor. Be sure that this diet will not pose any risks to you given your particular health situation.

Stay Focused!

The main thing to remember is that this diet requires a strong commitment. If you aren't super determined, it will be hard.

Try this diet when there is an event that will push you to stay focused. Just repeat to yourself: It is only three days. There. One, two, three . . .

Curb Your Cravings

A benefit of this quick diet is that it can help jumpstart a long-term diet plan. I have experienced this firsthand. It really does curb your cravings.

After doing this diet for three days, you'll notice that carb and sugar cravings have decreased. This alone is useful when you start a long-term diet. Think of this as a three-day boot camp.

Getting Started

I have tried this diet three times. The last time I did it, I cheated quite a bit, but I stayed within the general structure. For example, I ate smoked salmon instead of the tuna, I doubled the portions at times, and my spoonful of peanut butter might have been . . . well, let’s just say you couldn't see the bottom of the spoon.

I still lost six pounds in three days. Sure, that was partially water weight, but as long as it does not come back, fat and water count toward my body weight.

If you plan to do the diet for a whole week, I recommend that you begin on a Wednesday. You will see why below.

  • 1 grapefruit
  • 2 tablespoons sugar-free peanut butter

  • ½ cup tuna or ½ cup of low-fat feta or cottage cheese or ½ cup of sardines. No added oil.
  • 2 slices low calorie, low-carb bread (each slice being around 45 calories)

  • 5 ounces lean protein — you can use spices, but no oil
  • 1 cup of green vegetables (string beans, spinach, and zucchini are all good) steamed, grilled, raw, or sautéed
  • 1 cup beets, carrots, or celery
  • 1 small apple or pear (with the skin)
  • 1 cup sugar-free vanilla ice cream (do not worry about the calories or fat, just make sure it is sugar-free)

  • 1 egg, cooked without oil
  • 2 slices low calorie, low carb bread (each slice is around 45 calories)
  • Half a medium-sized banana

  • 1 cup tuna or 1 cup low-fat feta or cottage cheese or 1 cup sardines. No added oil
  • 2 slices low calorie, low carb bread (each slice is around 45 calories)

  • 5 ounces of lean protein, you can use spices but no oil
  • 2 cups of green vegetables (string beans, spinach, or zucchini are good) steamed, grilled, raw, or sautéed
  • 1 cup beets, carrots, or celery
  • ½ a banana
  • 1 cup sugar-free vanilla ice cream

  • 4 saltine crackers
  • 1 slice low-fat cheddar, Swiss, Asiago, Romano, or aged gouda cheese
  • 1 grapefruit

  • 1 egg, cooked without oil
  • 2 slices low calorie, low carb bread (each slice is around 45 calories)

  • 1 cup tuna or 1 cup low-fat feta or cottage cheese or 1 cup sardines. No added oil
  • 1 cup beets, carrots, or celery
  • 1 cup cauliflower or green vegetables
  • 1 apple
  • ½ cup sugar-free vanilla ice cream

  • Do not use any ketchup or other condiments.
  • Do not use too much salt. You can use as many other spices as you like.
  • Using mint might help curb your appetite.
  • Do not drink diet soda. You can drink sugar-free mixed drinks, such as Crystal Light punch, but if you drink one glass of Crystal Light, make sure to drink a glass of water. Your body processes water differently. This diet is a lot about flushing your system. So keep the bad stuff out as much as possible even if it has no calories.
  • It is very important that you do not stay on this diet for more than ten days. If you do it for ten days, you need to take 4 days off after the first three days and eat normally. Eat less than 2,000 calories on those days and do not eat sugar or white flour. Then you can do the diet for another three days.
  • Take a vitamin before you go to bed each night. Taking it in the morning may increase your appetite.

Sweet Success — More Tips and Rules

  • You can drink as much tea as you like, however, watch the coffee and do not use any creamer or milk. (Coffee can affect your blood sugar negatively, resulting in fatigue and making you less eager to carry on with the diet.) Drinking green tea will, in fact, help your weight loss.
  • Make sure to drink at least 10 cups of water. The warmer the water, the more it will help your goal. It is very important that you stay hydrated and that you preserve enough intake of salt.
  • Sleep well and do light exercises, like a long walk, bike ride, or swim. Do not do cardio or aerobic exercises. Do not overexert yourself, but do not sit on the bed and watch TV all day either.
  • If you do drink enough water and sleep enough, but you still get dizzy, headaches, cold sweats, palpitation, or feel unwell, stop the diet and eat. Every metabolism is different and no short-term goal is worth making yourself sick.
  • If you want to survive this diet as a means to jumpstart a long-term diet and need to eat more, then increase the portions (not the content of the food) and add a couple of 100-calorie sugar-free, low-carb, low-fat snacks throughout the day. An ounce of cheese or almonds with fruit are great snacks. You will not lose as much weight, but you will still stay on track and finish the three days, which is more important when your goal is to jumpstart a long-term plan.

Remember, be careful. Do not stay on this diet for more than three days at a time and do not eat less than what is listed.

Neb Revoorg on August 05, 2016:

This diet is amazing I love it, I have gotten to my goal weight. I was so close but propper exersise wasn't doing much this did it all. I'm already down 7 pounds day three.

Adrianne on June 22, 2016:

@mirage erin I want to thank you for this post! I know its 5 years old, but good, useful content is GOOD and true no matter how old! Erin, I'd like your input and feedback.

I can personally attest that this diet WORKS IF YOU WORK IT! I made mild moderation for flavor and taste and are still losing! Today is 3rd day lunch time, so i've done this for 2 full days almost to a T- almost including drinking a MINIMUM of 74.4 OZ of water per day with 2 tbs apple cider vinegar with the mother (Bragg's) and I have lost 3.8 POUNDS in 2.5 days with extremely minimal exercise other than day to day. My work keeps me very sedentary.

I made this diet more bearable by adding more veggies and a few other moderation's and it's super doable.

Due to thyroid issues and extreme gluten sensitivity I use 1 slice of gluten free bread instead of 2 slices of low fat/low calorie bread. I top my slice with 1-2 large tomato slices and a small boiled egg, salt and pepper to taste- AWESOME. I add the 1/2 banana to the side along with 1/4 of my water goal and I am FULL and because its so flavorful and packed with protein and vitamins, my body hasn't really noticed the difference (I'm sure it will eventually lol).

Lunch is another fun meal but I noticed that 1 can of Albacore Tuna was more than enough for me, though I think the diet actually calls for 2 cans. Yesterday I ate 1 slice of my GF bread, topped with a can of Albacore Tuna packed in water, 2 thick slices of tomatoes and a 1/2 tsp of mustard salt and pepper for taste. I then added a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese (i dont use low fat or fat free because my calorie count is already pretty low and I need the additional fat calories to satiate flavor and fat cravings) I then add a chopped small sweet pear and a sprinkle of cinnamon- MMMM MMM MMM! Drink more water!

To help curve munchies I purchased green seeded grapes, strawberries and apples. When I feel super munchy I nibble (nibble NOT GORGE) on these which and drink more water which actually helps get me over the 2-3PM munchies.

Dinner is 5 OZ. chicken or fish broiled with lots of seasonings, 3 cups veggies (frozen french cut long green beans with seasonings) and 1/2 banana, water, water, water. By this time the water is pretty low and I can usually down the rest with ice cream!

The ice cream is an awesome touch to the end of the day and well deserved! I usually take a small sweet apple, top with cinnamon and let this sit in the fridge for a few hours. When ready to eat my treat I nuke the apple for 2 minutes so its really soft then drain. I then add it to a 1/2 cup of Tillamook Ice Cream Home made vanilla or French Vanilla. I dont use a full cup because its 50 more calories compared to sugar free.

Here are my questions:

1) Can we interchange meals from day to day. I am not a fan of grapefruit especially when its tart, bitter and not sweet. I'm sure the originating authors of this diet had their reasons, but its so bitter. Nor am I a fan of low sugar Peanut Butter. Can I just stick to the egg, bread and tomatoes? Or does the Grapefruit and Peanut Butter add some vital additional nutrient? Can we change out the grapefruit for 2 small oranges instead or is this too much sugar?

The same with the saltine cracker breakfast. I would have to use for gluten free crackers which is fine, but it just doesnt seem filling enough for me.

2) Sugar Free ice cream is packed with so many harmful ingredients it's just horrible. I did eat it the 1st night because I figured i'd suck it up for 10 days, but the aftertaste is intolerable for me and the ingredients in the long term are so harmful I just cant (though the serving size is awesome), do you think the Tillamook 1/2 cup is a fair substitute or can you advise another brand outside of the sugar free realm of ice creams?

Awesome diet, great article! Will be back tomorrow to report on day 3 progress!

Thanks again!

Can I substitute the ice cream for skinny popcorn?

Natalie on May 23, 2016:

Is there a substitute for any of these?

1 cup of tuna OR 1 cup of low-fat feta or cottage cheese OR 1 cup of sardines. No added oil.

Sarah S on May 22, 2016:

This is horrible advice, people!! Quit the diet merry go round. Quit the starvation!! Go vegan!!! Carb up! Eat as much as you want! Eat more do more! Carbs are life.

Helen on May 15, 2016:

I never had results with this or similar diets either, for me because I naturally don't have a very big appetite so my body doesn't see this as a diet at all really. It's also a rather evenly portioned distribution of nutrients, which is good(!) but adds to the feeling that I am just eating normally and a bit more specifically.

If you have a similar problem trying something other than a meal plan type diet might be a better idea. Things like cayenne supplements, apple cider vinegar, probiotic tea/kombucha, etc. might be a better idea for you :)

Victoria on May 15, 2016:

This diet. Doesn't work. I followed everything that it told me to do and I only lost 2 pounds. The best healthy that I've ever done was a salmon diet that a doctor recommend. You can lose 5 pounds. I'm sticking to that because this diet sucked & didn't even get to half the results it promised.

Danari on April 23, 2016:

First day here. Can't wait to see the results.

Rosee95 on April 23, 2016:

I'm so excited to see the end results! I just went grocery shopping and had my first meal. For only 3 days I probably spent less than $20 for everything I needed! Instead of peanut butter I had some organic almond butter at home, and I blended the grapefruit into a juice with ice and a little bit of water, no sugar added. My tummy is so far satisfied!

Casey on April 13, 2016:

Day3 here and I have lost 5 pounds!!! I am so excited... I don't know why this cannot be done long term though I don't feel bad at all ..

Veronica on April 12, 2016:

Hi on day two can I have half cup tuna and half cup feta or is it one or the other?

Sheila on October 16, 2015:

Are you supposed to exercise with this plan or just eat it and carry on with a normal day?

GAYLE on October 12, 2015:

I noticed on day two....for dinner it was posted to eat two cups of veg. and the next line was one cup of another veg. Is this correct ? Three cups total for day two. The other days are two cups total. Just wondering if this may be a typo overlooked. I did day two first since I had most of those items. That was a lot of food to eat for dinner. I weighed out the ounces on a scale and it was more than I eat on a normal basis. However, this is a doable diet and I'm excited to try it. Thank you :)

Brandi on September 12, 2015:

This plan sounds very do-able, but I can't stand grapefruit. Is there something else I can do in place of the grapefruit? Also if you have time would you please re-read the plan. There are several mistakes that made me unclear. I would hate to assume what was meant and really mess it up. Thank you

Add Your Comment.. I just started this diet again, was in it years ago and lost about 55 lbs on it. It was quick loss for a minute but it gets you off the fats and sugars. After a while I didn't have to watch what I was eating it was just natural. Started to have more energy, started to exercise more, lost more weight, then hit plateau, but evened out muscle with fat. Clothes got bigger for once! Lol. We'll Have to see how well I do this time.

Hi thank you for this diet plan.

Am on day 2, started on Wednesday and it's not as easy as it seems. I tend to be feeling a lil lightheaded and weak but am determined to do this, I drink about 8 bottles of water a day and I have done everything to the T. Am not really seeing any changes on my body. Ill get on the scale Saturday and fingers crossed I have lost weight and this was all worth it.

But I just wanna say thank you!

lisa on October 14, 2014:

hi i tried this diet beforse and it worked really well..i was 155 pound. when i started the diet i felt kinda weird in the begining but i guess my body got use to the foods. and i Hate water but because i was so determind and focus on this diet thing i followed the diet rules.. 3 day on the diet and 2 days off but eating healthy like vegables and fruits i lost 20 pounds in a total of 7 days. i am so happy with the results now i have to work on some abs.

Rose on October 01, 2014:

Hi actually it's difficult to found saltines in my city so now what am i gonna do????

mirage erin (author) on September 28, 2014:

Deki-- 2 slices of low calorie bread. Cooking carrots will raise their glycemic content, so not a great idea. Best to eat vegetables raw for better weight loss.

Malikka-- if you can't find low fat cheese, I recommend eating a bit less of the full fat one. Make do with what you can.

Luis Moreno-- you only need to repeat the cycle one more time after four days of normal eating.

Allenafaith-- eat the ice cream! And don't switch. If you really want it's ok to eat a cucumber.

Sesp0588-- you can switch if you have to, but best not to. And yes, most everyone will see results after the three days.

DestinEF-- do you eat any fish or dairy?

Corinne-- a 14 year old should not be dieting and definitely not doing this diet.

Cindy-- sugar free gum is ok. However, some people feel hungrier when chewing gum.

Adolphine: Awesome!!! Did you keep it off? 8 pounds lost! Bravo!

Breezy!! 9 pounds lost!! That's amazing! did you do it again?

Rose-- why do you want to substitute the saltines? Salt content? Gluten?

mirage erin (author) on September 28, 2014:

Melissa, actually the calories add up to betweeen 1000-1100. Nevertheless, this diet should not be continued for more than three days, and in three days you will not get in starvation mode.

Natalie, no-- a 15 year old should not be dieting. Just eat healthy, sleep well, exercise and the weight will come off if there are no other health issues.

Alex! Wonderful!!! I have been traveling and put on some, so gotta get back to it myself soon.

Rya-- I don't think it's a good idea to take anything while on the diet. The following four days eat lots of fiber.

After losing the weight, best to calculate how many calories you need and track what you eat, weigh yourself and see how many calories are good for you. I find it's best to weigh yourself frequently.

Melissa on August 26, 2014:

I looked up the calories in each of these foods. If you were to eat exactly what's written in this plan, you would be eating about 600-700 calories in a day. This is putting your body in starvation mode (need at least 1200 calories), and will cause you to gain all the weight back soon after quitting the diet.

Natalie on August 22, 2014:

Hi I'm 15 and I was just wondering if this diet is healthy for me

A lot of lean proteins depending on what you like, poultry, beef, lamb! As long as it's a lean, that is fat free cut. I personally prefer fish, or even smoked salmon, which isn't too lean but that's all good fat!

Not sure how tall you are, but 123 is a pretty low weight. I wouldn't expect to lose a lot -- definitely not 10 pounds! That's almost 10 percent of your weight. Most of the sugar free ice cream has sugar alcohol in them. Is so delicious coconut milk no sugar added ice cream ok and does it have to be plain vanilla?

I think things like aspartame effect everyone differently... so hard to say. I know they affect me. But for a few days diet, if it's going to help you get through it, I would use truvia, it's all natural, see here

This may be a silly question, but I'm trying to do this exactly as said above. I saw where it said drinking green tea will help with the weight loss. Does this mean freshly brewed with nothing in it, or can I add something? Do Arizonas or any other brand of tea do the same? Thanks!

If you have to have an apple, go for it. I don't know about raspberry ketones, though. Frozen berries work as a good, healthy, low calorie snack for me. They feel like candy or ice cream!

can I snack in between the three meals, like having an apple and also is it ok to drink "Rasberry ketone"

If you wish, some are really sensitive to sugar. Better to eat peanuts even imho.

Ruse on January 13, 2014:

All the peanuts am seeing

is saying sugar less than 1 gram should I get that one

mirage erin (author) on January 13, 2014:

You can make it yourself! Just grind it up and add some salt.

Ruse on January 13, 2014:

Ok I will follow your advice and do the 3 day plan take a break and do it again the following week. I am having trouble finding sugar free peanut butter what else can I substitute for it

mirage erin (author) on January 11, 2014:

I don't think it's a good idea to do that! But the original plan suggests that you can do this diet for three days, take a four day break when you eat normally, and then do it again for three days. My opinion is that twenty pounds in ten days is way too much of a change for the body and that you should only use this diet to kick start your long term diet in a healthy way.
