Naturally Slim Reviews

In the fall of 2011, I used the online MyFitnessPal program to lose 20 pounds and kept that weight off for a full year. Although I was pleased I had kept the weight off, I was still 30 pounds from my goal and found I just wasn't losing anymore even though I was eating low-calorie and low-fat meals.

Discouraged, I decided to apply for the Naturally Slim Program through my work in the fall of 2013. A good friend had tried the program last spring and lost 40 pounds. His wife had lost 30. Both of them had nothing but good things to say about the program and what it taught them about how to eat to lose weight fast and keep it off.

Naturally Slim: Lose Weight and Keep It Off

This program worked terrifically for me, and the testimonials of other people who have spoken to me or written comments suggest that I'm not alone. My company has continued to sponsor this program and the hundreds of participants so far have always averaged over 10 pounds of weight loss in 10 weeks.

No dieting method is guaranteed to work for everyone, but trying this different strategy for weight loss is definitely worth a try, especially if you are discouraged by not being able to lose, or keep weight off after losing. Naturally Slim teaches you how to listen to your body and change your behavior about eating in ways that are not difficult, and don't leave you feeling deprived.

Ten years after starting my weight loss journey, I am still able to maintain my healthy weight through using what I learned in the Naturally Slim program and some simple healthy living goals: walking 4 miles a day, eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding (although not completely eliminating) fried foods and sugary desserts.

Naturally Slim Review

In eight weeks, I lost 19 pounds. I can't believe it. I've never lost weight so fast in my life. It is especially amazing to me because I was already eating very moderately when I began the program. My results are a faster weight loss than average, but the results for the 320 people from my work who have been on the program are an average of over 8 pounds in the first 8 weeks of Naturally Slim.

My Experience

  1. It Wasn't Hard to Lose Weight. More importantly, it wasn't hard to lose the weight. Better than that, I have learned how to eat so that I will not gain the weight back. Instead of feeling like I will always be a fat person no matter what my body looks like, I've learned to view myself as a normal-sized person who just had some bad habits I've learned to break.
  2. Pounds and Inches Off. What is most amazing to me is that I really see the difference in this weight loss. My face looks different and my clothes are all getting baggy. There are some skirts I love which I haven't worn in years because they were too tight. I tried them on last week and now they are loose. It feels like a miracle.
  3. Effective Weight Loss. I have actually reached my original goal, but because I have reached that so much more easily than I could have imagined, I have the courage to set a weight goal I did not think I could ever obtain. I want to have a normal BMI height-weight ratio and to give myself a 5-pound leeway so that I can keep my weight under control for the rest of my life by regularly checking and altering my eating if I go up a couple of pounds. How much further? Just 14 more pounds.
  4. Lose Weight and Keep it Off. In previous diets, I would get discouraged at this point because it seems that the weight loss slows down and gets harder, but Naturally Slim is a way of eating rather than a diet, so I know that I can continue without feeling completely deprived and that I will eventually get to where I want to be and stay there.

Effective Weight Loss

Keep a Healthy Weight for Life

Almost one year after the end of the program, I got to my goal weight and kept it off even when we traveled out of the country and I did not have access to a scale or any of the other foods I usually eat.

In fact, even though I knew my clothes had not gotten tighter and I didn't look any bigger, I was worried when we came back and I first stepped on the scale. To my surprise, I'd actually lost a pound from when I left. The program has taught me a lifestyle of eating which makes it possible for me to eat when I feel hungry and stop eating when my body has enough.

Now in 2021, years after the program ended, I've not only enjoyed finding I have dropped 4 sizes in clothes but I've also found that my long-term problem with knee pain is much better. I'm able to exercise harder and feel much better overall.

Moreover, I'm not the only one at my company that has had success in losing weight and keeping it off by using this method. The best part is that I really know I won't gain this weight back again.

Would Naturally Slim work for you? I'm not sure any program of dieting can work for everyone, but I think the fact that this program aims to teach a lifestyle of eating rather than dieting makes it worth a try.

My Weight Loss Journey

November 2012: I finished the ten-week Naturally Slim program and had a final weight loss of 22 pounds. My results are not typical, but the average loss of the over 200 people at my company who completed the program was 11 pounds in 10 weeks.

Update February 2013: When I got my cholesterol tests back, I was surprised to find that my cholesterol had gone up during the program. At the beginning of the program, I had a normal 195 total cholesterol, but my cholesterol count at the end of the program was 213. I was quite surprised because most people in the program have better numbers, but in following the guidelines of the program I had changed from eating a lot of vegetables and salads to eating more proteins, including steak and eggs (not required by the program but because I found they filled me up quickly).

Starting in December 2012, I changed my diet back to include large quantities of vegetables and fiber but kept the other basic principles of Naturally Slim. My weight loss slowed at first (this was also Christmas time) but after a while, my body seemed to adjust and I started losing again.

In three months, I've lost another 10 pounds, and have reached a normal BMI! Better yet, I went to have my cholesterol checked again at my doctor's office and it was 187 which is the lowest it has ever been.

Update April 2013: In the last video of the program, Marsha talks about a number of the different aspects of the program and says that the more of them you do, the quicker you will lose. I do like this aspect of being able to not follow everything strictly all the time but always have a plan of how to eat if my weight creeps up. I have decided that I want to set a goal of having my BMI in the middle of my range, rather than at the top. That is a goal I would not have ever considered possible before Naturally Slim, but I now feel like my weight is really something I can control. I feel like I have power over my eating, not the other way around. I have lost another 3 pounds and have 7 more to go. It is not as easy to lose weight when you are in your BMI range, which makes me realize why they have all those "lose 10 pounds in a week" sorts of articles in women's magazines. I want this weight to stay off, so I'm willing to take my time and take breaks along the way when my goal is to maintain my weight. I'll let you know when I make it!

My advice: Losing weight is the most important thing you can do to improve your health, so using the Naturally Slim diet is a great idea, but you may need to adjust the program as you finish your weight goals and seek a lifetime of healthy weight.

Update October 2013: Almost one year after the end of the program, I've gotten to my goal weight and kept it off even when we traveled out of the country and I did not have access to a scale, orange juice, or any of the other foods I usually eat. I was worried when we came back and I first stepped on the scale, but I'd actually lost a pound from when I left. Naturally Slim has taught me a lifestyle of eating which makes it possible for me to eat when I feel hungry and stop eating when my body has enough. I really don't expect to gain my weight back ever again.

Update 2014: I continue to maintain my weight loss. I have not gone back on the program in the past year, but I monitor my weight daily and adjust my eating. The most important parts I've discovered is to limit my sugar and salt intake, and eat only when I'm hungry.

Update 2016: I was actually looking at my Naturally Slim book yesterday because I'd forgotten how long it had been since I'd been on the program. I continue to use principles I learned in Naturally Slim to maintain my weight. Remarkably, I can say that all of the friends I know who have done this program have been able to maintain their weight loss successfully. I've actually had several friends do other weight loss programs during the time since I've been maintaining on Naturally Slim. They have not been as successful at maintaining that weight loss. Naturally Slim teaches a method that works.

Update 2017: I'm continuing to maintain a healthy weight and ready to hit my 5-year anniversary soon. My work continues to offer this program and I continue to follow the results. The most recent group who went through had a much smaller average weight loss. I do think that it may be this program doesn't work for everyone and perhaps most of the people it works best for have already done it. Because of this review, I got a phone call from Marsha, who is the head of the program. When I mentioned my enthusiasm for Naturally Slim and my desire to have my mother, who was more than 100 pounds overweight, try this technique, she was actually a bit discouraging. She pointed out that this method may not work for someone who is morbidly obese because there may be many other issues that cause that weight gain which the program cannot address.

Recently, along with working to maintain my weight, I've been focusing on eating really healthy foods. I'm aiming to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables each day along with a few servings of fruits. I find those low-calorie, bulky foods are another way to keep me satisfied and away from cravings. However, I also find it important to eat plenty of protein, which is something I learned in the program. Sometimes a handful of nuts or dried chickpea snacks are a terrific way to keep me going. Two of my favorite "secret" diet foods are the high protein Kashi cereals and nonfat Greek yogurt.

Update 2021: Wow--it has been about ten years since I started this journey and I am so glad I did! During COVID, walking around my neighborhood and in the nearby wooded trails has helped me to keep my body healthy as well as improved my mental health. Now good eating habits are so firmly established that I really don't think about my weight as much. I enjoy my morning oatmeal with blueberries and yogurt and look forward to the vegetable soups, salads, and stirfries that I make for many of my other meals. I sometimes crave a sweet or join my family when they go to get fried food, but I eat just a small portion because I actually don't like it that much. While I very firmly believe that the most important thing to do is to accept and love the body that you have, I also know the grief of having a body you feel trapped in and which prevents you from doing what you love.

History of Naturally Slim Program

Naturally Slim was invented by a woman who wanted to figure out how to lose weight herself. Observing and questioning her "true thin" friends, she devised this system, which helped her to go from 150 to 102 pounds, and remain at that weight for over 30 years. She taught the system to some doctors and recorded their progress in a book, The Dallas Doctor's Diet. Her daughter, Marcia Upson, became a family nurse practitioner and turned her mother's business into Naturally Slim classes for individuals and businesses. Judging from what Marcia says in the videos, she originally taught the classes in person, but now the program is largely done by video with an interactive Internet component.

What the Program Teaches

Learn to Listen to Your Body

As the teacher, Marsha, often says, this is not a diet. Instead, it teaches you to listen to your body and only eat when you are really hungry. That is the key to the program. As Marsha repeatedly says, "Your body knows how to be a body" and if you listen to when you are hungry, you will eat what you need but not overeat.

Eat Like a Thin Person

One very helpful aspect of the program is that it says that people who weigh more than they should aren't just "fat people" who can't control themselves. Instead, Ms. Upson suggests, we are people who have bad habits about food, many of which are caused by cultural influences she carefully explains. To "cure" ourselves of these bad habits and to teach us to eat like thin people so that we can be "naturally slim" is the point of the program. What I especially liked was that the techniques to eat like a thin person are simple, and ones I already knew but hadn't really put into practice.

Change Your Thoughts About Food

I also liked the fact that the program teaches a way of eating which combines ideas I've read in other sources and seen my own thin family members practice. These are simple to do and really do make a difference in how you feel about food and about eating. What is so very interesting to me is that I now enjoy the food I eat so much more. I eat less but am much more emotionally and physically satisfied with what I eat.

Tricks to Keep From Getting Hungry

Along with putting together some of these common ways to lose weight and keep it off, the program also has some special suggestions of when and what to eat which does seem to help people to eat less and lose weight faster. One of these tricks is another familiar technique: keep hydrated and remember that you may feel hungry when you are actually thirsty or tired.

Don't Count Calories; Change Habits

We all know that we lose weight when we take in fewer calories than our body uses. The heart of any weight loss program has to be getting us to eat less. As Marsha says, "people who need to lose weight have already got a lot of 'meals' they are carrying around with them." Counting calories works. I've done it successfully and programs based on that do help many people lose weight. The problem is, that once you stop counting the calories, the weight can very easily come back on again. The truth is, maintaining a healthy weight is going to take effort, but the program works to make that effortless by creating habits and patterns which, if you follow them for the program's 10 weeks, become something so easy to do that you can keep up with them the rest of your life.

Enjoy Food More

One of the things which makes me know I can continue with this program is that by freeing me from having to eat "diet" foods, and also forcing me to fully taste the foods I do eat, I actually can say I've learned to enjoy eating again. In fact, I have found that by following the slow eating techniques in the program, I have enjoyed the food I eat much more than I ever have before. I wouldn't want to go back to eating the way I did before even if I didn't lose weight!

Worth a Try?

I told a friend the other day that my weight loss on Naturally Slim feels like a miracle. It does. Should you try the program? Definitely. If you want to find a way of eating so that you can get to the weight you want to be and stay there the rest of your life, I think this is an excellent choice.

Questions & Answers

Question: What are the hunger savers?

Answer: Naturally Slim has a list of approved hunger savers that are all around 70 calories and include different types of foods that would appeal to different types of eaters. The two that I used the most were: a quarter of a cup of fiber cereal, and 6 strawberries.

Question: How do you listen to your body and know when it is hungry? Is it your stomach growling?

Answer: Naturally Slim says that there are 4 stages of hunger and that we should eat at stage 3, which is really before you feel extremely hungry (stomach growling). Then you should eat until you feel full, but not overstuffed. If you wait until you are extremely hungry, you probably will overeat. To control hunger, be sure to keep drinking a lot of no-calorie liquids, like water, and be sure to keep some small (under 70 calories) snacks on hand that can quell your hunger until you can have a proper meal.

Question: Does medicare advantage pay for the Naturally Slim program?

Answer: I don't know about payments from Medicare. I suspect they will not, but you might want to call them and ask.

Question: What can I do to stick with the Slim program?

Answer: I think that using the orange juice and water drink regularly is what helps the most. Like any weight regulation program, it also requires a decision and a deep desire to make a lifestyle change. I actually did not find it hard to "stick" with the program because I wasn't overly hungry if I followed the instructions. It definitely also helps to make a plan for your eating and to tend to eat the same things so you don't have to think about eating and cooking very much.

Question: What happens after the initial 10 weeks of the Naturally Slim program?

Answer: The program goes for ten weeks to teach you all the techniques and to get you into the new habit of eating differently. After that, you can continue on your own, and the last lesson gives you ideas on how to do that. There is also a way to follow up with Naturally Slim online.

Question: Can Vegans do the Naturally Slim Program?

Answer: Yes, any sort of dietary restrictions should be fine on this eating program. No type of food is required and there are no restrictions which should interfere with any Vegan, gluten-free, peanut free or any other dietary restriction that I know about.

Question: Is drinking the H2 orange bad for your teeth?

Answer: I have found that it is better to drink clear water after H2 orange and also to brush my teeth more often. Each person has differences in dental health so I’d advise you to consult with your dentist.

Question: Can a person continue using and drinking the Elevate Smart Coffee while doing the Naturally Slim program?

Answer: If you are using a product that does not have added sugars, then I think you can probably continue using it with Naturally Slim.

I am sure the Program works if 3/4 times you could download and watch the videos. I've tried 2 computers and my cell phone and have missed capabilities to watch 3/4 of the videos. My company wasted their money. I even sent email to the Naturally Slim helpdesk. Very disappointed, Again today, my 10 weeks are not up and I spent 30 minutes TRYING to watch the video

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on July 16, 2018:

Hi Lawren! Good for you to have lost that weight! Exercising is really important for weight control but also for better life and strength. I have not rejoined the NS program myself although it is offered by my work. I do generally keep up with the basic parts of the plan and how it teaches you to eat differently. For me, the keys have been: eating when hungry, eating slowly, not eating until I get hungry (basically this means you do what I've since learned is called an intermittent fasting diet), eating lots of protein, and drinking a lot of liquids. What I do that is not on the NS plan is eat lots of veggies (5 or more servings a day) and I also tend to eat the same things on a regular basis--things that I've calculated the calories on so that I generally know how many calories I'm consuming. I eat: salads with meat, homemade vegetable soups, omelettes made with fake eggs and lots of vegetables, stir-fry vegetables with chicken and rice or pasta, Subway foot-long sandwiches with all the veggies and either ham or turkey, no-fat Greek yogurt with fruit, Mrs. Butterworth's sugar-free syrup and Kashi cereal (my typical breakfast). Of course, I don't only eat those things, but I probably eat about 75% of my calorie intake with those meals. For snacks, I eat peanuts, high protein 200 calorie power bars (a meal supplement I keep at work, handfuls of cereal or fruit.

All of those meals and snacks are ones that I really, really like to eat. I actually do periodically change my "regular meals" because I eat something at a restaurant or create a new meal at home that I like. For me it really works to have these typical meals to eat because it helps me keep on track. All of these look like a lot of food on my plate, which is very helpful to me psychologically, but they are all in the 300-750 calorie range, which means that I can easily eat 2 or 3 of these a day (with a few snacks) and keep on track.

I do think that you might want to consider NS again if you think it will help you motivate yourself, but what I'm trying to give you here is the idea of how you can put in place some "checks" on your own eating that help you keep the discipline. Hey, this is so long I should have made another article!

Lawren from Hurst, TX on July 15, 2018:

Hi Virginia,

I went through NS in September 2015 through my former employer. I still have access to the minutes with Marcia and keeping track of my weight. I lost 35 pounds total that year on the program. Since then I have gained back 10 pounds over the last couple of years. I am in week 3 of an exercise program for mobility and strength and although I am feeling stronger, I seem out of control with my eating habits now. I am wondering if I should rejoin the NS program as a private individual. I have copious notes but I really did well utilizing the weekly videos. It encouraged accountability I presume. Any words of wisdom would be awesome as I am contemplating rejoining.

I would like to try it, how can I get the info.

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on July 22, 2017:

Kathy, you have a very good question. I did not always follow the rule about eating the foods in order but I think the point about finishing one food before starting another is that you can satisfy your need for the flavor of that food and maybe not actually eat all of it, saving calories. However, to answer your question, you can do whatever you want after waiting. When eating out, you might want to modify this a bit. Sometimes I just eat really slowly and either don't entirely stop, or maybe wait less time. Of course, it might help to eat fewer fries if they are cold! Although the rules of Naturally Slim are rather extensive when you get into them, I found that keeping the main principles in mind have helped me over the long haul. For me, these are to eat very slowly (when I'm with a group at a restaurant, I'm usually the last person still eating) and to pay attention to whether I am really hungry or not and to stop eating if I'm not hungry. I think each person has to adapt to the "rules" that work best for them.

Kathy on July 22, 2017:

Question about structure of eating.

After first 10 min and waiting 5 min, can I go back to the food I was eating in the first 10 min or move on to the next food?

Going out to dinner is hard, eat burger 10 min and if I'm not done

Wait 5 and go on to cold French fries?

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on June 23, 2017:

Hi Chris--I think that it is important to eat when you are hungry and more than one hunger saver means you really need a meal. I did find that after a while of my body adjusting to the program that it was easier to not feel hungry. Now, I eat however many meals my body needs that day. The key is listening to your body and not your eyes or schedule.

Chris on June 23, 2017:

The principles of the program are liberating and help me be in control in any eating situation. My struggle with the program is not eating breakfast. What if I'm hungry for 3 meals a day. I feel like it would be better to eat breakfast than to consume hunger saver after hunger saver to make it to lunch. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on April 20, 2017:

Hi Heather--I'm so very happy that you are encouraged by the program. I really think that the program helps you to change your mindset about food, eating and body weight. I think that it does help you feel like you are more in control.

Heather on April 20, 2017:

I started NS a couple weeks ago and this is the first time in years that I feel capable of losing. I had started to give up hope of ever reaching a healthy weight but I really feel like NS is going to get me there! I've lost 7 pounds so far, I don't feel hungry or deprived and I don't feel so much guilt/shame about food. Fingers crossed that NS continues to work for me (I believe it will) because I want to live a long and healthy life for myself and my family. Thanks for posting this and providing updates!

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on March 21, 2017:

Hi Janie--I don't think there is a max amount stated in the program. The point of the H2 orange is to satiate your hunger and to make sure you keep on hydrating. I think that having one glass of H2 orange followed by another glass of plain water is a good idea if you are drinking a lot throughout the day. That helps you keep your blood sugar levels up but would make sure you weren't getting too much sugar.

janief on March 21, 2017:

What is the max amount of H2orange per day?

I'm struggling to watch the videos each week. That woman's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. She also talks to us like we're toddlers. She should have had someone else do the videos for her.

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on March 03, 2017:

Cam--So sorry you had such a bad experience and that you were actually forced to do this program. Personally, I don't think any program would work for everyone.

Cam Kimler on March 02, 2017:

I gained weight constantly while on the program. And frustrated with it caused my blood pressure to soar to a dangerous level. The insurance REQUIRED we take the program or pay nearly $1000 more a year for insurance. It wasted my time, our food and the cost of our internet service went up due to the hour long videos. I got to the point I literally got sick every time I had to watch another one and hear that woman's syrupy voice. I have no teeth and eating while they insisted on was impossible too. I had low carbs but they went thru the roof with this diet. It was a waste. A total waste. And we are being forced to take it again this year. I am dreading it again. I plan to ignore the videos and let them play thru while I am busy with other things.

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on September 21, 2016:

Hi Tracy--terrific question. Actually, Naturally Slim is not so much a dieting plan as a way of training yourself to eat the right amount of food to be able to lose and then maintain that weight loss. The program teaches you different steps that all work together to keep your hunger down and to keep you from eating more than your body really needs. I think that is why it is effective. It eaches you a lifestyle change and then after you get to your weight goal, you switch from weighing weekly to daily weighing. When you see the scale go up a little bit, you add in some of the steps that help get that weight off right away. The program is designed to not let you get that weight out of control again.

How do you keep weight off after the program

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on September 15, 2016:

Hi Christy! I really hope this program works for you. I did the program as an individual and most of the people I know did it that way too. I met today for lunch with one of my Naturally Slim friends. We are quite a few years down the road now and still slim! Good luck and best wishes!

I am about to start the Naturally Slim Program as an individual, and this site has really encouraged me. Everyone seems to have had positive results with the program, and I am looking forward to being able to say the same. I'd love to keep in contact as I go through the program, because I'm a little nervous about the lack of accountability as I complete the program through the internet. Thanks for all of the valuable information that everyone has shared from their experiences with Naturally Slim!

I'm about to star this program on 7/25 and I'm very excited to try it - especially after reading these wonderful positive results!

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on April 20, 2016:

Hi, Merry! I believe that the videos say you don't have to put in orange juice. Just drinking the water will probably do it. I'd suggest that you could have another very small, say 30 calories, snack to supplement the water if you needed that. I'm not speaking for the program, of course, just my own ideas. Now that I am on a maintenance track, I will do that sometimes. Strawberries are a good choice, or peanuts, or one of the other hunger savers perhaps. Just 1/2 a serving will do it.

MerrySherry on April 20, 2016:

I just started the program. I can't drink/eat citrus foods. Does NOT doing the H2 Orange juice make a difference? Can I just stay hydrated? I can see how the smidge of orange juice gives a small "trickle" of sugar that keeps blood sugar level - but I am not finding that I am getting hungry/snacking so far.

Wow, Jen! That is amazing. So proud of you and thank you so much for stopping by to share your story. I was just musing yesterday about how my life has changed since I lost my weight on Naturally Slim. In the few years since I went on the program, I've seen other friends lose and gain weight back. All of my friends who were on Naturally Slim, however, have maintained the lost weight. Congratulations and best luck for the end of your goal!

I was introduced to Naturally Slim through my workplace as well. I started the program in Juky of this year. So far, I've lost about 32 pounds and have more to go. I just love hearing the encouraging stories of those who have gone through the program and have vi tuned weightloss and have maintained it for years. The program priciniples are so simple! I love that I do not feel deprived. As someone said, I do not deprive myself, I only delay. I caneat whatever I want, I just wait until I'm hungry! How easy! I sing the praises of this program constantly! And I love that my example has inspired my own daughter to think before she eats! Such a healthy concept for all! Thank you for sharing your story!! Just the boost I needed to keep going.

Ruth--Thanks for sharing your story! It is great to finally be able to get those pounds off! I'm now over 2 years "post Naturally Slim" and I've kept the weight off. I'm in my BMI zone but have not been able to lose any more. I'm trying a different strategy right now. I started 2 weeks ago and plan to post on it soon. It is the Shred Diet, which actually uses some similar ideas from Naturally Slim (when you eat is important and keeping blood sugar constant to control hunger) but approaches the whole thing differently. I've lost 3 1/2 pounds in less than two weeks, so I'm hoping this continues to work for me. Good luck!

Ruth on January 28, 2015:

I did NS through work in March 2014. Lost 30lb and 2 clothing sizes and have kept it off coming up on 1 year. I find that sweet stuff no longer appeals to me...even makes me "pucker" when I've tried a bite of some dessert that looked yummy. I make three 20 oz mason jars of H2Orange every morning and enjoy it through the day. Adding exercise to take another 20lb or so off...

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on January 03, 2015:

Congratulations to you and your husband Anissa! I'm now over 2 years past the finish of my program and I have remained at my correct BMI weight for the whole time. A few pounds up and down, but never feeling like I was out of control. I have wanted to drop another 10 pounds and think I may join the Alumni program at my work to try to do that this Spring. I did find that at a certain point I wasn't able to lose more and I do know that the statistics of the Alumni group is to only lose about 3 pounds in 10 weeks, as opposed to an average of over 10 pounds for the first time group. I've done some research and find that people that lose a lot of weight have a problem with their metabolism slowing down so that their body needs fewer calories. I think that Naturally Slim works better because it avoids a focus on calories and focuses on helping you listen to your body's needs. Congratulations again!

Anissa on January 02, 2015:

My husband and I started naturally slim in Feb 2014 through his company and have had great results. I've lost 40 lb and am smaller than I was when I graduated from high school. My husband lost 50 lb, but has gained some back during the holidays. He's "back on the wagon" and plans to keep losing. I now know exactly what to do to drop those "fluff" pounds without trying every fad and weird green shake concoction and it is so liberating! And I have had to buy all new clothes. Yay!

Beverly on September 12, 2014:

2 good points - learn portion control and eat slowly. I was immediately turned off by the first "lesson" as it's example with eating the chips or peanuts is based on deception. The reason they don't taste as good as you keep eating them is because your taste buds are coated with oily substance! Take a drink of something and all that changes. Also NOWHERE is it mentioned that you should drink some sort of beverage during a meal. I'm sure it has the same intent. Actually if a beverage is consumed during the meal, it might just aid in stretching the stomach and giving the feeling of fullness. The diluted orange juice concoction wouldn't make it past my nose! Not to mention that you are consuming an acidic drink all day long!

Michele on May 12, 2014:

I used the program with great results. I have stopped the program and following the principles, so I am going to try again. I have 30 - 40 to lose. I did notice mood swings on the H2Orange. I felt once I had not had any H2Orange, I had no energy and was kind of out of reserves so I was not necessarily nice. Also, 12 years ago when I did the program, they were encouraging splenda - hopefully not anymore - that gave me headaches.

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on March 18, 2014:

Thanks JDubya--I am now 17 months past the end of the program and I have kept my weight off too. I really feel that I have the mindset, tools and methods to keep my weight where I want to have it for life. I don't think most programs offer that.

Jeff Wilson from United States on March 18, 2014:

I've also had the good fortune of enrolling in the Naturally Slim program. I began the program in early 2012 at 240 lbs, and I've been 200 lbs or less since May 2012. Almost two years, and still going strong! Absolutely agree with the 5 star rating.

Nicole--so glad to hear your long term report. I really wish I'd had the course before I had babies. It is sometimes so hard to get back in shape. I agree with your statement about having to actually eat more sometimes. What is amazing about this program is that you actually learn how to eat so that you are not hungry. I should tell you that the new online program does have a great forum that you can be a part of. And they also allow you to review the lessons periodically. You might want to contact Naturally Slim to see if you can join the forum, or take the course again.

NicoleGooch on November 19, 2013:

I did Naturally Slim my senior year in High School fall of 2003(wow! 10 years ago) I lost 15 lbs in 7 weeks.. and have been a fan ever since! I have used this program to slim for prom, my wedding... and after babies. I used the program to maintain in college which was great!

After about six months --- of doing it with nursing I had to be careful because I wasn't taking in enough calories. -- I will say as it says in the book -- Walking, and drinking H2Orange... are major KEYS to losing the most weight... I recommend this program to all my friends.. and am back at it hardcore! -- What I wish right now is that I had more accountability. -- I know I can take the course over... but I would love to apart of a forum where everyone encouraged each other to keep going!:) -- So excited to find your post!

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on November 17, 2013:

Brenda--congratulations! I'm nearing my one year mark and I have found that I am able to eat sweets and snacks occasionally. I do watch what I eat but I've always done that--even when I wasn't the right shape and size. So glad you shared!

Brenda on November 17, 2013:

I have just finished my ninth week and have lost 10 pounds. I do not snack and have not had ANY sweets during this program. I love to snack on cake, cookies, chips etc but have not really missed it. I do still watch what I eat (due to being on WW for so long) but enjoy good food. I know my weight loss was due mainly to no snacking and no sweets. I am still trying to slow down my eating and I feel confident that if I could master this I will lose the additional 5 pounds to make my goal. I had blood work done at about three weeks in to the program and my glucose went from 107 to 61. My cholesterol had also dropped. We will do blood work again next week. Can't wait to see the numbers. I do believe I can eat like this from now on. I know I will need to incorporate sweets in to my diet (just every so often), but at this time I think it is best for me to abstain.

Mo--Thank you so much for sharing your story. It is so encouraging to other people to know that you can lose weight. I'm now at almost at my one year anniversary from the end of Naturally Slim. I've kept that weight off and actually lost 10 more pounds. I am at my correct BMI for the first time in 20 years. I weigh the same as I did in high school. I feel so much better. My husband (who is actually not overweight but wanted to go to a lower part of his BMI range in order to help his joints) is now on the program and is also losing. The best part is that I now have a range of ideas that I can adjust to keeping my weight off. I'm now trying to lose 10 more pounds by adding on a few more of the weight loss strategies. I like the fact that the end of the program gives you a whole variety of things to do. When I do more of them, I can lose weight again. Good luck! Blessings.

Mo on October 25, 2013:

I have been on the program for 7 weeks so far and I have lost 14 pounds. I have spent my entire life being heavy. I have tried all different types of diets. This is the first time that I am finding success. It is so easy to do. I don't feel hungry and I get to eat what I like. It just teaches you when to eat and how much you should eat. I feel so much better since I have lost some weight. I have a lot more to lose but I know that it is possible with the tools that I have learned with this program.

Nana--thanks for sharing your story. So terrific to hear that you have made these changes. I am approaching the one year mark of when I started the program and I am now at the weight I was in high school. Better yet, I was on a 7 week vacation outside the US when I did not have access to the foods I usually eat or any way to weigh myself. I came back with a little nervousness when I stepped on the scale--I hadn't gained any weight! On the trip, I was not really able to follow many of the Naturally Slim principles but I did keep to the main one--eating just when I was hungry and only as much as I really needed to stop being hungry. What makes this program so much better than any "diet" I've ever tried is that it has changed my eating patterns and made me into a naturally slim person.

Nana Beach on August 29, 2013:

I have lost almost 40 pounds in the past five months doing Naturally Slim. I also knew these principles from reading Thin Within back in the 70s. Naturally Slim really helped me deal with my emotional eating. My granddaughter said, when I told her I often used to eat when I wasn't hungry, "You ATE WHEN YOU WEREN'T HUNGRY?!!! BUT WHY, NANA?!!!!" Being a True Thin, she did NOT understand that. But all of us overeaters understand. We fulfill all sorts of needs by eating. This program WORKS!!! I'm on my way to my high school weight!

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on March 07, 2013:

Hi disappointed--I think that the first couple of weeks on the program are a little tough. I also felt low energy at first. However, I think a lot of that is due to a switch in diet and no sugar. The body needs to adjust. He might need to drink more H2Orange. I drank the maximum amount. I also did continue to have coffee throughout the program. In about 2-3 weeks I think you begin to feel back to normal. Some of the irritation I think comes whenever we deprive ourselves and miss that food, like the sugars. However, I have not found that you really have to go forever without sugar. I do find that keeping without sugar helps me lose faster and more evenly. I also think that getting a lot of weight off faster is really emotionally motivating and one of the most important things in any weight loss is keeping motivated to keep on going. Glad you've stuck together for 33 years! I'm heading into my 20th anniversay this year. I don't know if Naturally Slim works for everyone, but I do know it really worked for me in a way that counting calories alone was not able to do. I am a calore counter but the fact that Naturally Slim helps you to think about eating differently changes the way you approach food. Now I'm about 6 months into eating this way and I don't think I could go back to eating the same way as before. I'm 4 pounds under my original goal weight now, and have a BMI of under 25, so I'm "normal." However, I think I can get closer to the middle of my BMI range, something I never imagined could ever be a goal before. So I'm seeking to lose about 10 more pounds. Naturally Slim makes it possible to think like a slim person. I've actually found it easier to get my body skinny than to get my mind to feel that I am a skinny person--which tells me that much of our weight situation in the US is mental as well as physical.

Disappointed on March 07, 2013:

My husband started this program though his company since being on the H2o Orange and cutting back on portions and no SUGAR at all and talking bout taking supplemts (keep in mind he would not take multi-vitamin or motrin for a headache) he has dropped about 10lbs and one pant size all good but we have noticed mood swings and him not having energy going to bed almost an hour earlier which is like 8 o'clock seems like he is really defensive if anyone comments on this program I have read a lot on the program I find strange or unbleiveable no comments on side affects or that didn't work for them. Don't know if we will make it 10weeks! We have been married for over 33 years so I think I know him pretty well. Help!:(

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on March 02, 2013:

Kim--thanks so much for giving your personal experience. I agree that it is a lifestyle change which does mean that you will make some changes at first which will have to be a choice and deliberate. But of course you have to make some change if you want to have a different body shape. The longer I follow the principles of Naturally Slim, the easier it is, I've found. I actually don't think I could go back to eating the way I did before without feeling very uncomfortable and not enjoying my food. That is what makes this such an interesting program. It helps you retrain your body to be Naturally Slim, not Naturally Not.

Kim on March 02, 2013:

Yes! This program works! I have lost 18 pounds since August 6. I have 10 more to go. I never would have done this. However, it was a program sponsored by the company I worked for. So I figured it was worth a try.

This is the easiest thing I have ever done to lose weight. I don't feel deprived because I get to still eat all the foods I love!!! The key is MODERATION. Marcia Upton gives you plenty of strategies to help you with moderation. The only thing I have given up is sodas and sugar in my coffee. I have just followed most of Naturally Slim principles and the weight has dropped off. No diet and no counting calories!

I highly recommend this program. Just remember... it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change.

Carla on January 06, 2013:

I have done this program (through my employer) lost 30 lbs and kept it off for 1 year - I started up on their advanced program and am looking forward to pushing through to my goal of 40lbs down - this program is super simple to follow the whole family can follow it dispels myths and misery of the diet industry and doesn't cost you an arm and leg plus you don't have to EAT ALL THE TIME with snack - it is a lifestyle reform program and the benefit it you lose weight -

kitkat1141 from Ontario, Canada on November 10, 2012:

I have never heard about this program. Thank you for the detailed information. It must be difficult to stick to 1000 calorie a day diet.

JSParker from Detroit, Michigan on November 07, 2012:

This was very interesting. The ideas are really sound. I am currently doing Weight Watchers online, which I think is a good program, too. For me, weight loss/management is a never-ending process, and I'm getting better at it. Still have about 25 pounds to my best weight, but I'm getting there.

Best wishes!

Virginia Kearney (author) from United States on November 06, 2012:

Carol--I thank you so much for your comment because I think you are absolutely right--these "secrets" are just the things that thin people already do. Two of my kids are "true thins" and I'm learning from them how they manage to eat just the right amount.

carol stanley from Arizona on November 06, 2012:

I read this with interest..and most sounds like just good common sense. And also when following a plan people stick with it when the goals are precious to them. I have stayed the same weight and size my entire adult life..and do a lot of what is in the program...No sugar..almost never.. except that glass or red wine. To me I think before I eat..and never get full.. Nothing tastes as good as fitting into you clothes...You did a gret job in explaining this system and if I wanted to lose weight I would go for it. Voted UP and sharing.
