Part 1: Your Appearance

  • If you are at your ideal weight or within 20 pounds of it, use this set of questions:

A. Even if out of shape, you are strong and thick with a muscular appearance. You have a large chest and sturdy arms and legs.

B. You are long limbed and narrow through the chest and hips.

C. You are boyish and underdeveloped, more like a boy than a man.

  • If you are 20-50 pounds overweight:

A. You look square, thick and heavy. You gain weight on the front of your body in a potbelly. You also gain weight in your hands, feet and face.

B. You are saggy and out of shape with extra pounds all around your middle. Your face, hands and feet are still relatively slim.

C. You are pudgy all over, like a child who has gained weight.

  • Use this set of questions if you are more than 50 lbs. overweight:

A. You have a very large stomach with a lot of weight also on your back. Your rear end is round and weight extends down legs to feet.

B. You gain weight all around your middle in the form of a large, spare tire. You also have a potbelly that extends all around your middle. Your face, calves and lower arms also carry weight, but not as much as your middle. (chest to thighs)

C. You have an undefined shape with fat all over your body

  • Viewing yourself from the front, which best describes your general shape?

A. Both your upper and lower body are square, thick and strong

B. You are small- boned and long-limbed

C. You are childish-looking without much definition anywhere

  • Viewing yourself from the side, which best describes your shape?

A. Back slightly swayed, rounded rear end

B. Straight lower back, neck coming forward somewhat, rear end flat or slightly rounded

C. Shoulders quite rounded, head coming forward, rear end small and childish

  • Viewing yourself from the back, which best describes your shape?

A. Shoulders are strong although not very broad, square looking from shoulders to hips, waist not very defined

B. Shoulders are wider than hips

A. Square or round

A. Square hands with blunt fingers

What If You're Not Sure?

If after taking the test you're still not sure which is your metabolism, it might be a good idea to re-take the test with the help of a close friend or family member. Also, Dr. Abravanel provides drawings of the different body types in his book that is very helpful in determining your metabolism. Sometimes, just a quick glance at the drawings is enough to break a tie.
