What Are Hot Pants and Do They Help You Lose Weight?

Updated on July 7, 2017

Zaggora Hot Pants

Hot Pants are a weight loss garment that increases your personal body heat to promote perspiration and weight loss. Based in the UK, Zaggora claims that Hot Pants can help you lose two dress sizes in two weeks by wearing the pants during the day, night, and during workouts.

The reviews have been amazing, so I thought I would do a bit of research to see if the pants really work.

So, how do Zagorra HotPants work? Let's find out.

How Do Hot Pants Work?

Hot Pants look like bike shorts made of a wetsuit like material. Zaggora claims they help women lose two dress sizes in two weeks with their Celu-lite technology. The pants use your natural body heat to increase perspiration, an 80% increase by their accounts, and perspiration leads to calorie loss.

On their website, Zaggora discusses connective tissue under the skin and claims cellulite is present in women because of a breakdown in this connective tissue. (See below for more information about cellulite and connective tissue.) However, they don't tell you how their pants help remedy the cellulite problem. Personally, I'm not exactly sure how they decrease cellulite in a more significant way than normal weight loss would.

My Experience with Hot Pants

A British friend of mine bought a pair of Hot Pants on a recommendation from her friends in the UK. (Apparently, they are quite big over there. Selling over 100,000 pairs in the first 10 weeks!) After working out in them for a few weeks, she said she could feel a difference. But, did she see a decrease in cellulite because of the pants? She couldn't say for sure, but she did say that when she worked out she was sweating more than she ever had before. That can't be a bad thing!

A few weeks ago a Groupon surfaced with the Hot Pants as an item. Since they are normally around $75 a pair - not cheap - and the Groupon was for $26, I thought I'd try a pair. A couple of days ago, I received them in the mail. Wearing them for the first time, I can see how they will make you prespire more. They feel like you are wearing a wetsuit, but more comfortable. After wearing them for a day my skin did feel smoother to the touch. I also worked out in them and I was definitely sweating more.

Drink a Lot of Water!

Anyone who has taken Bikram, or hot yoga, knows that when you sweat a lot it is very easy to become dehydrated. If you are going to wear Hot Pants, you will sweat more, so be sure to drink a lot of fluids! One of the perks that Zaggora says of Hot Pants is your skin looking healthier; this is probably a direct result of the increase in water you have to drink.

What Is Cellulite and Why Do Women Have it?

Cellulite is the dimpling and bulging of skin produced by adipose--or fat--cells pushing through the connective tissue under the skin. Connective tissue holds the skin to the muscle beneath it and is arranged differently in men and women. While men sometimes have cellulite, it is much more prevalent in women. The fibrous connective tissue in men is arranged in a diagonal, smooth pattern, while the connective tissue in women is arranged in a vertical pattern. This slight difference in arrangement allows for the adipose cells to reach the skin and cause dimpling.

Have you ever wondered why thin women have cellulite? This is because skin thickness and elasticity--not just fat cells and connective tissue--also play a part in cellulite. Men have thicker skin than women, so again they are less likely to have cellulite. Younger people have more elastic skin, allowing for everything to remain smooth. With puberty, the skin elasticity in women decreases, becoming more susceptible to cellulite forming. This coupled with weight gain as we get older increases the likelihood of more cellulite around the legs and hips. On and off dieting also has an effect on skin elasticity. Losing large amounts of weight and gaining it back takes a toll on our skin. Unfortunately for women, the coupling of thinner and less elastic skin along with connective tissue prone to the exposure of adipose tissue, leads to the dreaded cellulite.

My Verdict

Here's what I think about the Hot Pants: they definitely reduced the appearance of cellulite. After wearing the pants for even a few days, I noticed that my skin appeared smoother and was smoother to the touch.

Did I lose two dress sizes in two weeks? No. I wore the Hot Pants every day for multiple hours every day, some days all day including workouts, and I didn't seem to lose even one dress size. While I think the Hot Pants are helpful, i.e., they make you sweat more and can decrease the appearance of cellulite, I don't think that the claim that you can lose two dress sizes in two weeks is accurate. I'm always a bit wary about those types of statements anyway; there isn't a quick fix to any weight loss.

To test the Hot Pants, I continued my normal exercise routine, but didn't change my diet at all. I think that with exercise AND diet, perhaps the Hot Pants will give you an extra boost. So, if you're thinking about buying the Zaggora Hot Pants, don't expect to lose two dress sizes without making other lifestyle changes as well. If you're willing to exercise and eat properly while wearing them, you may just lose that weight!

Would your try HotPants?

New Zaggora Products: Nude Hot Pants, Capri Flares, and Flares

Zaggora recently came out with a few new products: Capri Flares, Flares, and Nude Hot Pants. The Capri Flares come below the knee, much more comfortable for many women. The Flares are full length leggings that go to the ankle. They are tight at the bottom. The Nude Hot Pants are for wearing under clothing. If I were to buy a pair of Hot Pants today, I think I would go with one of the Flares. I wish they had been available when I purchased my Hot Pants.

Even though there were good reviews for Zaggora shorts i happened to come across some similar ones, i’m also cynical about a lot of reviews by reviewers associated with brands online being totally impartial, that’s not to say they don’t produce good products, even though some are pricey. as i don’t believe sites that review them are totally impartial.

So i did my own research, there are many so couldn’t decide. However a friend recently told me about trimbo workout shorts for women because she had good results. I had to search for it online. They harness the heat from your workout, initially very sweaty i lost water weight, but having stuck with it for 4 weeks wearing the shorts for spin class the weight started to drop off my waist and thighs, only negative was each time i wore them to class my thighs were very wet.

And no i’m not being paid/sponsored, i’m just a regular girl with no affiliation to any supplier of products.

If like me you’ve found a product via your own research or via a friend and having tried them they turn out to be really good, do same as me and add your comments so that real women like me and you aren’t being sold the usual suspects and get to try other good products.

Robin, Thanks for this article. I might try to see if these would work for swimming in winter in a heated pool in CA. The heated pool in our complex is still chilly in winter, and wetsuits are VERY expensive. I might give this a whirl. Thanks this article that addresses probably one of the top ten concerns of women :) :)

      Cheers, Billie

I'm glad I read this. I've never heard of them before and not sure I'd try them, but if they really don't help you lose weight any quicker, I probably wouldn't buy them.

Hot pants in my young days meant the tiny shorts that had a bib in the front of your bodice and straps from your back that button across the shoulders to the bib in front. In other words, minuscule, tight dungarees. Cute if you were slim and gross if you were obese and followed fashion blindly.

As regards the hotpants of the hub, did anyone's belly fat get burned off? Or the flabs on the underside of the upper arms? If they did, then I'd say the hotpants worked.

Very interesting, not heard of hot pants but definitely after reading your hub I should once give a try to analyze the effect more closely.

I haven't heard of these pants before. I do inner thigh exercises to burn fats in my adductors and the surrounding muscles of my thighs. Works well, too! haha!

OK, I was a teen in the 70's and back then hot pants were really short shorts! Things sure have changed. You are a brave woman for trying these out for us. :) Thanks.

Interesting hub, Robin, have not heard about this product (in fact, when I read "hot pants" I thought you meant the super-tiny shorts that teenage girls wear and yes, they would help you lose weight because you would absolutely HAVE to lose weight to wear those things!)

However, I am a die-hard skeptic. It sounds like hot yoga to me (which I don't like)...you sweat it all off, then drink a large glass of water, and isn't it all back on again? Water for water? I kind of buy the shivering the fat off method more (which Simone mentioned) just cos that's based on burning calories. Although I wouldn't want to try it!!

I agree with your final comment that ultimately (sadly) there is no magic trick to losing weight, just good ol' diet and exercise.

Meanwhile I'll keep holding out for the magic bullet, surely someone will invent one...hopefully Snickers-flavored!

It took four weeks to receive my order but the Zaggora website warned that this might happen. I am wearing them every chance I get and will post my results. So far, I'd say the cellulite thing works. No explanantion for why this would be so but my thighs and belly have velvety smooth skin and less appearance of cellulite. I am hopeful about weight loss. You definitely sweat a lot. Pants are comfortable to wear.

Interesting Hub, Robin! Do you know what's unique about Zaggora's Hot Pants compared to similar products (like the "boogie" shorts from Lu Lu Lemon)? It sounds like the material is probably thicker, but I'm just curious!

The Hot Pants do work. I received mine the first week of December 2011 and I can definitely see the results. Firstly, my legs are much smoother and younger looking. Don't know how they do it but the cellulite on my legs has improved 100%! You can hardly see it now and my legs looks so pretty! Also, my jeans fit much looser too. I actually had to order a pair in small since the medium pair is now a little too loose.

I ordered the hot pants thru Groupon on Nov. 22nd and I received them just before Christmas. I was hoping to get them sooner, however I gifted them to a friend who is trying to lose weight. She was a little bothered by how much she sweats with them on but I think it's great! I just ordered my very own nude pair and I really hope to get them a lot sooner than 3 weeks! Crossing my fingers :)

I ordered the Groupon deal as well and ordered my pants on the 22nd. I still haven't received them and my order status said that it is still "Awaiting Shipment". I'm worried. How soon did you guys receive your order after your purchase?

Robin, this is so interesting! I had heard of hot pants but have never read anything about them. I'll be following this hub for sure! Maybe they are even better worn throughout the holidays! You can sweat off the pounds while you eat. At least the average 5 lb weight gain during the season wont find its way to you! This was very useful. I may have to purchase a pair.

      Hi Peggy,

Well, it's been a week and I have lost a little weight, probably only enough that I would notice. I think two dress sizes is unrealistic. It is the holiday season though and anything just to stay constant right now is good! Thanks for the kind comment! ;)

Thanks for the comment, Simone. The material isn't abrasive, it really feels like a wetsuit. Apparently, the pants are supposed to increase circulation which helps with cellulite. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if they actually work.

Most interesting! Do keep me posted on whether you think they make a difference. It's funny to me that one would suggest heat as a weight loss method (unless one is seeking to lose water weight alone). It seems like temperature is a popular weight loss topic though. Tim Ferris with his aggressive body program/book/thing suggested taking ice baths or getting cold instead, since the body has to then expend more energy to stay warm. Seeing as I hate being cold, this would not be a something I'd go for. Wearing a wet-suit like thing sounds a bit more agreeable.

As for cellulite... it'd be SWEET if those pants did something to address that! It's neat that your skin felt smoother after you wore them. Are they ever so slightly abrasive or something? Like, do they exfoliate?

Bodies are weird. I'm looking forward to uploading.
