Review of Meal Logging in Noom Weight Loss App

Updated on February 3, 2017

The key to achieving a fit and healthy body is learning to balance good nutrition with consistent exercise. The Noom Weight Loss App for Android and iPhone helped me lose over 20 pounds in the last 8 months. I believe there is no quick fix for healthy, permanent weight loss. I’m so fed up with hearing about all the newest “miracle cures” to take off the pounds. Healthy weight loss should happen slowly yet consistently. The “Noom Weight Loss Coach has everything you need to learn to eat well, be active, and stay motivated.” Their website claims that 86% of users lose weight successfully. The Noom Coach teaches you how to make real lifestyle changes for permanent weight loss and better nutrition. And the best part about Noom - it’s free.

Learn to make Permanent Changes with Meal Logging

Similar to other weight loss apps, Noom is a food diary. Where it is unique however is in how it breaks down meal choices. Instead of logging each food, condiment, and drink separately – which can quickly get boring and overwhelming – Noom color codes its food options. Green foods are healthy and should be eaten in abundance – fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, non-fat dairy, etc. Red foods are unhealthy and should be eaten only in moderation – sugar, red meat, processed and fried foods, full-fat dairy, etc. Yellow foods land somewhere in the middle and include white flour products, eggs, low-fat dairy, healthy oils, chicken and white meat, etc. The goal at the end of the day, according to Noom, is to have a pie chart filled mostly (at least half) with green foods, a small sliver of red foods, and the remainder filled with yellow foods.

I find this unique way of logging food to be more efficient than other weight loss apps. Instead of meticulously counting each calorie each day, you learn to make better food choices as a whole. I’ve also found that by allowing myself a small amount of red foods each day I’m not depriving myself which keeps me from binge eating. Noom has changed the entire way I approach mealtime. The best part is that Noom does not require you to log each meal each day. Instead, Noom randomly selects which meals to log and when, and averages out your eating habits from there.

Stay Motivated with Daily Reminders from Your Personal Coach

In addition to food logging, the Noom Coach motivates you each day with unique tasks. Tasks involve reading articles, doing a challenge, or logging a meal. Articles range from the dangers of sugar in soda to the importance of healthy carbohydrates. All articles will teach you something about health, nutrition, or exercise and are designed to keep you informed on health and wellness.

Challenges are different and usually require an activity. Some challenges are simple like a daily step goal, or more difficult with a daily stair goal. Completing articles and challenges earn points. Earn enough points and you’ll eventually level up. Your daily Noom score tracks how you’re doing. With Noom I never get bored. I’m constantly learning something new or trying to accomplish a new challenge.

Fun and User Friendly Exercise

The Noom Coach comes with a built in pedometer. As long as your phone is on, it is recording your steps. You’ll be surprised at how many steps you take a day between the grocery store, work and school. With Noom I find myself walking the “long way” to increase my daily step count. The GPS makes it simple to track mileage and time on outdoor activities. Furthermore, as a woman who often walks, hikes, and bikes alone I feel safer knowing the GPS is tracking me in case of injury or emergency.

Noom tracks indoor activities too. It tracks virtually any exercises you can think of from treadmill walking/running, to Zumba and aerobics, to stationary biking and even house cleaning. Just keep your phone in your pocket and it will track the activity as you do it, or simply log the activity once you have completed it. Zoom’s single click logbook makes it user friendly and efficient. Program workout reminders and goals and never forget another workout.

Still need more motivation? Share your exercises, meals and more with your friends using the Facebook tool. Join Noom groups in the forum to connect with others that share similar goals or use the forums to ask health questions.

Noom Coach Free Version is Worth a Try

I’ve been using the free version of Noom Coach for Android for over a year now and with its help, I’ve lost over 20 pounds during the past 8 months. I could barely walk 2 miles when I started. It would take me 30 minutes to walk just one mile and I would be sore for days after. Now I walk 5 miles in 90 minutes (18 minute mile) three times a week. If you have an iPhone or Droid, check out the Noom Coach – why not? It’s free and can change your life.

Today is my second day of noom. I have been a couch potato for way to many years. I am sixty five pounds over weight. My first day I got excited at what a daily walk and five minutes of stair climbing will do for me/to me. I plugged in the numbers and Walla I also like the food tracker. I never realised how many calories I must have been eating. This morning I was excited to start my day.

I loved the old Noom app on Android, but the Noom for iphone just doesn't work for me. I eat low-carb/paleo and it's incredibly irritating, and for me, just wrong in terms of the foods which are deemed 'good' or 'indulgent'. Too bad, it was a great app when I just indicated s/m/l, and good/ok/indulgent.

You are so right Kathryn. Like most good things in life, weight loss comes with persistence and patience (sort of like making money on Hubpages huh? lol.). That is why I like Noom so much. It's really designed to help you make lifestyle changes instead of just quick fixes. I'm no expert in fitness or nutrition but I do know the formula to good health is simple - good diet, consistent exercise, plenty of water. Thanks for stopping by!

This sounds like a very interesting app! Thanks for sharing it with us. I like to check out useful apps, and this one sounds like it is worth a try.

I also get irritated with all of the so-called "Miracle Diets", and the ads that claim one thing or another will help you to lose weight without working at it. Weight loss can be done by anyone, with old-fashioned hard work: exercising and eating well. There is no one size fits all approach, but cutting out some of the "bad" foods, not consuming as many calories, and exercising will help to lose weight, people just need to be patient!

Hey Vicki, that's a great point. So often these weight loss programs are one size fits all. Although the Noom App is not customizable, it would work with any type of diet. The food logging part of the App is really a food diary with the Noom Coach offering suggestions - which you don't have to follow. Like with any food diary, the idea is really just to get people thinking about what they're eating. My favorite part of the App is the GPS. When I go on a walk with my dogs the app tracks my route! Thanks for reading!

Well, that seems like an interesting app. I wonder though, what about those like me, who eat a low carb eating plan? I guess this is one of the pitfalls, that people prefer so many ways of controlling their diets. It is great that you had such good results, and presumably will carry on with the good work ! Nice Hub, good, clear writing and description.
