Ayurvedic Practitioner Lists Foods to Avoid for Those with Digestive Issues

They can wreak havoc on your system.

When you’re experiencing digestive issues, one of the main ways you may choose to combat such issue is by changing your eating habits and opting to eat healthier. However, while that sounds like a good option, in the world of Ayurveda — Indian traditions medicine — it’s imperative to be even more mindful of what foods you are feeding your body no matter how healthy they are or appear to be.

According to Ayurveda, all humans have three energetic forces of nature, or doshas — pitta, vata and kapha — which are believed to be responsible for a person’s physiological, mental and emotional health; so when there is an imbalance in any of these doshas, it can wreak havoc on your health and wellness, in particular, your digestive system. To prevent this issue, TikTok content creator @fayy.luna, offers up a few foods to avoid if you’re experiencing digestive issues.

The first meal she suggests avoiding is yogurt parfait with fruit and yogurt. This breakfast item may be healthy, however, these two foods are incompatible in Ayurveda because when combined in your gut, they create a sticky, fermented mess that causes toxins and can potentially cause even more digestive issues since fruit is light and easy on the body, while yogurt is more heavy and harder to digest.

The next dish she recommends to avoid is açaí bowls and smoothies. Although delicious, this treat is always cold, which means it takes the body longer to digest due to the temperature. Additionally, açaí bowls tend to mix all type on ingredients together such as fruit or granola and presents the aforementioned issue of certain foods not being compatible with one another when consumed at the same time, therefore potentially creating even more gut issues.

Another food item is uncooked oats because again, this type of food is hard for the body to digest, so you’re better off simply cooking your oats and eating them that way. Lastly, green juice and smoothies are another type of food to avoid depending on your digestive strength. However, because green juices and smoothies are cold, it takes the body longer and makes it work harder to digest.
