UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System
Since I was rather disappointed with the new Your Shape Fitness Evolved game for the Kinect, I decided to try something new. I’ve always been interested in boxing; my dad won golden gloves for boxing in the Navy so it seems to be in my blood. I thoroughly enjoyed the Cardio boxing classes in the original Your Shape game. When UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System was released, I couldn’t wait to try it.
I wasn’t disappointed. UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System provides a grueling workout, while teaching MMA (mixed martial arts) fighting techniques. There are a number of ways to train, which keeps things interesting. (I haven’t tried all of the pre-made workouts yet. I have to work my way up to the more advanced techniques. I’ll be updating this article as I try new workouts.)
The game also gives you the capability to create your own workouts, which I have found to be extremely helpful. I’ve been able to isolate areas that I really want to work on such as my abs and arms.
When you first start the game, you have to go through a fitness test designed to determine your current fitness level. It is a series of activities each lasting one minute in duration. You have to do as many push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks as you can in the time allotted. At the end, you check your active heart rate, and this determines the level of intensity for your workouts.
The game makes a recommendation, either beginner, intermediate or expert, but you can change your fitness level, or even retake it. You’re encouraged to retake the fitness test several times. In fact, there’s an achievement for retaking it 20 times. You should also enter in your personal information (age, sex, weight) as this helps determine how many calories you burn per session.
Three MMA trainers, Mark Dellagrotte, Greg Jackson and Javier Mendez, provide about 30 minutes of video instruction in the game that details exactly how to do certain combinations and the correct way to throw a punch. For someone who’s never taken an actual martial arts class, this was invaluable. I have watched the videos repeatedly to improve my technique. Every time I watch the videos, I learn something new.

There are plenty of pre-made workouts to choose from, and you can also choose which trainer you’d like to work with you. Each trainer has their own style of MMA fighting. Mark Dellagrotte trains using Muay Thai martial arts. Greg Jackson uses jujitsu/wrestling, and Javier Mendez trains you in kickboxing.
There is also an option to jump right in with a “Quick Workout” which typically lasts about five to seven minutes. Both the pre-made and quick workouts start with a warm-up session and end with a series of stretches to cool-down. When you create your own workouts, the option to add warm-ups and cool-downs is available.

You can also choose to start a program. These are 30 or 60 day training programs designed around three goals: build strength, cut weight, and increase endurance. These programs are intense to say the least. You have a scheduled session six days a week for the duration of your program, and you can see what is planned for each day of the week in the calendar view, which also shows if you’ve missed a session, and how many sessions you’ve completed.
Quick workouts are set up in the same categories as the fitness programs. Unlike the pre-made workouts, you don’t get to choose which UFC fighter will train you. But, they get you right into the action and are just as intense as the full pre-made workouts.

The activity section in this game really shines. There are four different activities to choose from including “Hit the Mitts,” which is my favorite. You choose a sparring partner from a large selection of UFC fighters. My personal favorite is Mark Dellagrotte, but I’m a woman. Nothing is more motivational than a hot guy telling you to punch him. The sparring sessions last between three and four minutes, and there are plenty of them. Currently, there are 3 download packs with 15 sparring sessions each. I’ve found these sessions really help improve my fighting skills and help get out some aggression.

Free striking is another activity available in the game. It’s just you and a heavy bag. You can choose to do a 1, 3, or 5 minute session, and you pummel the bag as hard and fast as you can while maintaining good form. This is fantastic for creating your own combos and working on cardio endurance.
Flip the tire is another favorite of mine. Like free striking, you can choose 1, 3 or 5 minutes. The object is to squat for a few seconds and then flip the tire as you stand up. It’s not as easy as it sounds. You have to hold the squat for 3 seconds, and then flip the tire. I have yet to try the 3 or 5 minute session. My quads start burning at the end of one minute, but I’m working on that!

Hit the speed bag is the last activity. I have yet to be able to figure this one out, but my husband completed it easily the first time. Again, you chose your time limit. The goal of the speed bag is to work on your concentration and timing. This is not one of my favorites.
You can also watch all of the videos you have unlocked in this section. As I said earlier, there is about 30 minutes of video instruction. These videos pop up the first time you try a workout or activity, but you can re-watch them here.
This is fun. You can battle a friend in Hot Seat by taking turns in hit the mitts to see who gets the better score. You can also play side-by-side, or issue a challenge via Xbox Live. There are several achievements for the multiplayer part of the game, so have a buddy you can coerce into playing with you!
This section tracks anything and everything. You can track your weight; see how many calories you’ve burned since you started playing; how long you’ve been playing the game or how much progress you’ve made in different areas (like cardio for example) and so much more.

I give UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System 4.5 out of 5 stars. Why not 5 out of 5 stars? I wish the game would show me a running tally of how many calories I’ve burned in a session. The game shows you a calories burned estimate after each workout or activity, but there is no running total. So if you workout with the game for 90 minutes like I do, you have to write down all the calories you burn and add them all up if you want an exact total. The player tracker gives you an estimate on a graph chart, but I’d like exact numbers.
I also wish the game had more video instruction. The instruction provided is well-done and easy to understand, but it’s limited to the harder combinations and beginning punches.
Another thing I’ve found that drives me nuts is during the warm-ups and cool-downs. The trainer repeats himself like a broken record it seems. It’s the same few statements repeatedly. You only need to tell me once that I should cool-down after each workout. I’m not a two year old.
Despite these flaws, UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System has replaced Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 as my exercise program. It’s more fun, and keeps me motivated to continue working out. Who doesn’t love punching things?
